    • An electric motor comprises a first motor element (6) and a second motor element (1) coaxially disposed on a motor axis and thereby defining an air gap. A first number of magnetic poles (5) is disposed on the first motor element (6) adjacent the air gap and produces a plurality of circumferentially equispaced magnetic fields in the air gap, adjacent fields having opposite polarities. A second number of armature means (2) is disposed circumferentially on the second motor element (1) for generating an equal number of poles, the armature means (2) being divided into groups, in which all the armature means (2) of a group are energised substantially in phase and generate adjacent poles of opposite polarity, wherein the second number does not equal the first number. The second number may be 9 and the first number 8 or 10 or the second number may be 15 and the first number 16 or the second number may be 21 and the first number 20 or 22.
