    • Apparatus for treatment of human or animal cell samples (4) on a microscopic slide (2) includes an element (1) having a recessed face (6) defined by rails (7) which are adapted to slide on surface (3) of the slide (2). An opening (13) at the leading edge of the element (1) has a bevelled edge (5) and provides access to a cavity (6) formed between the face and the surface (3) of the slide (2) when the rails (7) bear on the slide (2). The slide (2) is tilted slightly and a vacuum nozzle (8) is arranged at the lower edge of the slide (2). An end stop (9) may be clamped to the end of the slide (2) opposite to the end where the nozzle (8) is located and has a bevelled edge complimentary to the bevelled edge (5) of the element (1) for closing the opening (13). A method of spreading liquid over the surface (3) and the sample (4) involves placing the rails (7) on the surface (3) with the cavity (6) displaced laterally from the sample (4) and the face (6) and surface (3) parallel, dispensing the liquid onto the surface (3) and moving the element (1) relative to the surface (3) whereby the liquid becomes trapped in the cavity (6), and is spread evenly over the sample (4). The method also involves removing excess liquid after incubation by exposing the cavity (6) to the vacuum nozzle by sliding the element (1) over the lower edge of the slide (2) and allowing the nozzle to suck the excess liquid away. Further treatment liquid may be added adjacent to the opening during the suction process to provide a second treatment without exposing the sample (4) to air between treatments.

    • A closed tube sampling apparatus (14) for drawing a specimen sample tube (16) having a pierceable cap comprises a tube loading carousel (15) in which sample tubes are radially disposed and indexed in turn to an aspirate position. A needle carrier (42) is moveable linearly to move an aspirate needle (17) from a park position where the needle is in a wash station (47) to an aspirate position where the needle extends through said wash station and pierces said cap for the purpose of aspirating a sample from the tube. The needle wash station is also moveable relative to the needle carrier and is spring (49) biased to bear on said cap and prevent withdrawal of the cap as said needle is withdrawn. A dispensing pipette (20) is in fluid communication with said needle and subsequently dispenses said sample onto a slide. A slide transfer apparatus for sequentially transferring single slides (40) from a stack of slides onto a slide conveyor (12) includes a pickup head (11) having a bellows type suction cup (39) for lifting and holding slides. A fixed optical sensor (34) detects a home position of the pickup head and the travelling optical sensor (36) on the head detects when a slide is held and released from the head. The degree of movement of the head in releasing a slide is detectable by the travelling sensor (36) and thereby a microprocessor is able to determine whether one or two slides have been transferred by the head from the stack to the conveyor. The amount of movement of the head from the home position to the top of the stack and from the home position to the top of the conveyor is also determined by the microprocessor which in determining all movements counts the revolutions of a stepper motor which is responsible for such movement.

    • A coverslip pick-up and transfer head (10) comprises a pair of spaced suction cups (26) which are angled downwardly and outwardly. A spring loaded plunger (13) in an extended condition extends below the suction cups such that when a cover slip (16) is held by the suction cups it is flexed in a concave shape. A solenoid (15), when energised, retracts the plunger against the spring force. In use a coverslip magazine (17) containing a stack of coverslips is raised under the head causing the plunger to retract until the suction cups contact the coverslips. Vacuum is applied to the suction cups and the magazine lowered whereby the coverslip is held by the suction cups and flexed into a concave shape. The solenoid is energised momentarily causing the plunger to retract and extend thereby delivering a gentle flexural pulse to the coverslip causing any further coverslip adhered to the underside of the top coverslip to be released and returned to the magazine. A coverslip laydown head (19) includes a pivotal lever (23) which is spring biased to provide a progressive force along the coverslip as it is layed on a slide at an ever decreasing angle to thereby cause mountant on the slide to spread evenly over the slide with a uniform wavefront.
