    • A catheter integral with a valved needle-free connector provides a safety catheter device configured to receive a blunt cannula and sharp needle forming an insertion mechanism. The sharp needle is mounted within a needle tube and a control handle is used to slide the sharp needle out of and into the protective needle tube. When the insertion mechanism is mounted to the connector and the control handle is used to slide the sharp needle out of the tube, a blunt cannula first moves into contact with and enters the bore of the valve mechanism of the connector opening it and protecting it from damage that may be caused by the sharp needle. The sharp needle is then extended through the connector and extends out the distal end of the catheter so that a venipuncture procedure may be performed to properly locate the catheter in the patient's circulatory system. Once located, the needle may be retracted into the insertion mechanism, the insertion mechanism disconnected from the connector, and discarded.

    • A fluid infusion pump includes a platen between an outer door and the pumping mechanism. The platen is located so that as the outer door of the pump is moved to the closed position, it moves the platen to position the fluid flow tube into occlusive contact with the pumping mechanism before the platen engages a flow stop formed integrally with the tube and releases the flow stop to permit fluid flow, thus avoiding a free flow condition. The door also includes a handle having a sear with a hook that engages the flow stop when the door is in the closed position. As the door is opened, the hook moves the flow stop to the occluded position before the platen is moved away from the tube thus preventing a free flow condition. The platen includes a flow stop release portion that is offset from the remainder of the platen that operatively engages a release tab on the flow stop to permit movement of the flow stop to the fluid flow configuration. The platen is mounted to the housing with a floating hinge and datum pins located on the face of the pumping mechanism precisely locate the platen into position with the pumping mechanism and thereby result in precise positioning of the fluid tube.

    • A system for controlling fluid flow through multiple conduits for use in a fluid administration device. The system includes a housing, a cam, and a control element used to move the cam to selectively occlude the conduits. When used with a medical burette, the cam is located between the vent and supply conduits and rotates to alternately occlude one or the other conduits or to leave both conduits patent. A cam lobe occludes the conduits by pressing the conduit against a pressure surface until occlusion is obtained. Depending on the rotational position of the cam, the continuous flow mode, the intermittent flow mode, and the priming mode are all obtained with a single control lever. The housing secures the conduits in predetermined, fixed positions both above and below the contact location of the cam to the conduit. A positive locking device is included to assist in locating the cam in the desired position. A tactile sensation is also provided to the operator by the locking device to indicate that the cam has been placed in the desired location. Clear visual indicators are included on the housing so that the flow mode in which the burette is presently operating can be seen from a distance.
