    • A printing apparatus (1) has an ink-jet printer (2), a medium tray (4) for conveying a medium (3) to be printed by the printer (2), a medium feeding mechanism (5), and a medium retrieving mechanism (6). The printer (2) has an ink-jet printing head (21) and a tray conveyance mechanism for reciprocating the medium tray (4) along a predetermined conveyance path traversing the printing position of the printing head (21). A medium tray (4) carrying an unprinted medium (3) is placed on the medium feeding side of the printer (2), the medium tray (4) is conveyed past the printing position of the printing head (21), and the medium thereon is printed. The medium tray (4) is discharged to a medium tray discharge section (24). After removal of the medium (3), the medium tray (4) is returned to its original position. The medium tray (4) carrying the media (3) is reciprocated for repeated printing of the media (3). Printing of captions and the like on the surfaces of CD-Rs and other plate-like recording media can be readily conducted.

    • An output device (16) of an electronic prepress system (10) has a first operating mode for outputting color separated images individually onto a first image receiving material and a second operating mode for outputting the color separated images onto a second image receiving material with the color separated images superimposed as an assembled color proof.
      The invention involves a thermal imaging apparatus (16) comprising a support (30) for supporting a receiver material and a donor material in a superimposed relationship. The support (30) includes a cylindrical drum having an inner circumference on which the receiver material is supported against in a bottom layer of the superimposed relationship and the donor material in a top layer of the superimposed relationship. An imaging unit (40) thermally transfers an image from the donor material to the receiver material. A material selecting mechanism (20) selects a material from a plurality of material supply rolls (104). A material dispensing mechanism (150) dispenses the material from the plurality of material supply rolls toward the support (30). An applicator (50) automatically loads and unloads the receiver material and donor material onto the cylindrical drum. The output conveyor (70) removes the material without contact between the image on the material and adjacent platens. The imaging material has an inherent curl and is loaded onto the cylindrical drum (30) with the curl aligned with the inner circumference of the cylindrical drum. The apparatus according to the present invention includes a redirecting mechanism (300) for redirecting of the imaging material in a direction against the inherent curl.

The printer includes a paper feed roller (354) which is pivotable between a paper feed position and a non-feeding position, a drive force transmitting mechanism (355, 356, 358) for transmitting a drive force to the paper feed roller (354), a carriage (600) reciprocatively movable along the width of the paper fed by the paper feed roller (354), and an intermediate transmission mechanism (337) attached to the side of the carriage (600). Only when the carriage (600) is in a stand-by position, the intermediate transmission mechanism (337) couples with the drive force transmitting mechanism to transmit to the paper feed roller (354) a paper-feed directional rotating force so as to rotate the paper feed roller (354) to the paper feed position. The intermediate transmission mechanism is preferably an idler (337) rotatably mounted on the side of the carriage (600). The paper feed roller (354) is preferably driven through a planetary gear mechanism including a sun gear (358) provided on a drive shaft, a paper-feed roller holder (356) rotatably mounted on the drive shaft, and a planetary gear coaxially provided with the paper feed roller (354) supported with the paper-feed roller holder (356).
