Subsequently, the entire seat-back may move rearwardly, for example by pivoting about an axis defined by the recliner mechanism.

According to the invention, the back is characterized in that the upper back section (1) is both adjustable for height and pivoted with the shoulder support (1b) region and the headrest (1a) forming one piece. The lower back section (2) is an upward-facing extension (20) in the spinal region which can engage in a matching downward-facing aperture (10) in the upper back section (1), the extension of the lower back section (2) completely filling the aperture (10) when the upper back section (1) is in its lowest position.

A pivot axis is positioned at an upper end of the lower portion of the back rest, and an upper portion of the back rest is pivotally attached to the pivot axis. The location of the pivot axis is configured to be positioned below a person's shoulders when the person is seated in the adjustable seat. The upper portion of the back rest is also pivotally adjustable relative to the lower portion of the back rest. A seat pan having a front portion pivotally coupled to a rear portion can be attached to the upper frame. An actuation mechanism is configured to simultaneously control a vertical height of the upper frame and a rotational position of the front portion of the seat pan.
