摘要： An infrared light emitting diode arrangement comprising an infrared light emitting diode which emits positive luminescence when forward biased and emits negative luminescence when reverse biased. The diode is driven by an alternating forward and reverse bias input so that the difference in output power between the positive luminescence and the negative luminescence of the light emitting diode is stabilised with respect to temperature. The infrared light emitting diode arrangement has particular application as a source in gas sensors and reduces or eliminates temperature control requirements for infrared light emitting diode sources.

摘要： Crystal growth apparatus comprising a crucible for containing a supply of molten material from which the crystal may be grown and first reflection means for receiving radiation directed along an input path and reflecting radiation towards second reflection means, whereby the second reflection means reflect output radiation along an output path. The first and second reflection means are arranged at or in close proximity with the surface of the molten material such that during crystal growth they maintain a substantially constant position relative to the surface of the molten material. The apparatus may comprise support means for supporting the first and second reflection means, whereby the support means are arranged to float on the molten material. The apparatus may be a single crucible apparatus or a double crucible apparatus. In the double crucible apparatus, the support means may be a second, inner crucible containing molten material in fluid communication with the molten material in the first crucible, whereby the inner crucible floats on the molten material in the first crucible and the first and second reflection means are supported on the inner crucible. The apparatus may also comprise image processing means for forming an image of the crystal or any part of the growth interface region and for determining crystal diameter measurement or meniscus diameter measurement during growth. The apparatus may also comprise means for controlling growth of the crystal in response to the measured crystal or meniscus region diameter. The invention also relates to a crucible for use in growing crystals and a crystal growth method.

摘要： A multi-element fuel cell system comprises a substantially cylindrical former (2), a rechargeable hydrogen fuel source (3) and a plurality of fuel cell elements (4). The former comprises a series of interconnecting modules each perforated to allow passage of fuel to the fuel cell elements. Each fuel cell element (4) is positioned radially outwardly of the former (2) and is provided with channels, arranged to receive and direct fuel gas, an anode current collector, a gasket (12), a first diffusion backing layer (8), a membrane electrode assembly (10), a second diffusion backing layer (9) and a cathode current collector (11). The cathode current collector applies even compression to the fuel cell element, such that good electrical contact is maintained within each fuel cell element. The fuel cell elements are electrically connected in series via respective anode and cathode current collectors and then capped at each end of the former for connection to equipment. The former and current collectors have substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion and the fuel source is coupled to the fuel cell elements. The system is suitable for man-portable applications.

The floating gate (F53) is programmable with charge to preset the phototransistor current under prearranged illumination conditions to counteract unwanted signal contributions (e.g. fixed pattern noise) or non-optimum circuit characteristics. The floating gate MOSFET (MFG67) may alternatively be connected in series with the source follower output (D65) to control current at an output circuit node. The circuit may be a member of a pixel circuit array and may include programming circuitry (M84, M85) to select it for programming and to isolate it to enable other array members to be programmed.

The means for changing the polarisation of radiation may comprise a feature having an edge oriented at a non-zero angle to a direction parallel with, or orthogonal to, the first plane of polarisation. Typically, the feature may be a linear metallic strip, or may be a feature having a crossed dipole antenna structure. The apparatus may also comprise means for determining the orientation of the feature or features. The polarisation changing means may also comprise covert means for preventing the changing of the polarisation properties by the polarisation changing means in one or more selected location, wherein the arrangement of the one or more selected location provides an identification code.

Additionally or alternatively, it may be used to generate duplex destabilisation data such as melt hysteris information for amplification monitoring or for detection and quantitation of polymorphisms or allelic variation, and so is useful in genetic diagnosis.

摘要： Activated carbon filters containing transition metals, are prepared by (a) exchanging the transition metal with a cellulose ion exchange material to produce a cellulose material containing the transition metal; (b) charring of the product of (a); activating the product of (b) to form an activated carbon filter having a pore network throughout; and removing surface carbon substantially throughout the pore network of the filter formed in (c).
