摘要： @ A machine for cutting the teeth of a rack for a variable ratio rack and pinion steering gear employing a helical pinion having a plurality of idential teeth engaged with a rack having some tooth gaps of varying form and angular disposition to the rack axis, the machine having a spindle carrying a tool with a single cutting tooth having cutting edges which lie on the surface of a single tooth of the helical pinion; the spindle is arranged for helical reciprocation in a housing between two predetermined limits about a mid position in which the tool is directed normally to the plane of the teeth of the rack, a rack holding fixture, the fixture or the housing being moveable with a relative translatory curvilinear motion during the cutting of a gap of the rack, the motion for any one gap being a part of the locus of the helical pinion when slid without rotation in the same gap of the rack.
It is preferred that the tool is retracted away from the rack being cut in a radial direction towards the axis of the spindle, at the end of each cutting stroke.

摘要： A track (17) and a vehicle to operate thereon, the track (17) comprising two laterally spaced apart sets of running faces (18, 20) each of which having an upper running face (18) and a lower running face (20), the vehicle having at least one axle assembly (12) with at least a first set of two wheels (6) journalled thereon and engaged with the respective upper running faces (18) and a second set of two wheels (19) journalled thereon and adapted to engage with the respective lower running faces (20), characterised in that the second set of wheels (19) are forced into running engagement with the respective lower running faces (20) by at least one actuating mechanism (21, 24) which varies the force of engagement by means of a sensed signal indicating loss of adhesion or imminent loss of adhesion of the first set of wheels (6) with respect to the upper running faces (18). Also disclosed is an arrangement wherein the first set of wheels (6) are inwardly inclined and mounted on a self steering bogie (7) having a set of freely rotating flanged steering wheels supported from the axle assembly (12) and engaging the upper running faces (20).

摘要： A switch for connecting a railway track (1, 1) with a branch railway track (2) the railway track having a discontinuity, switching being effected by a mechanism which moves both ends of the railway track adjacent the discontinuity from a first position in which they align with both ends of a fixed part of the railway track (5, 6) to a second position in which they align with both ends of the branch railway track (7, 8), the movement being effected by causing a section of the railway track (3, 4) adjacent to the discontinuity to flex. In a preferred form of the invention the section of the railway track is lifted and lowered during the switching procedure. The two rails (3, 4) of the flexing section are connected together by ties (20), these ties (20) when moved cause the rails (3, 4) to flex.
