    • The present invention provides an engine unit, or the like, capable of achieving improved mountability to vehicle. The engine unit includes: a four-stroke engine body having a high-load region and a low-load region; a three-phase brushless motor that starts the four-stroke engine body and generates power after starting the four-stroke engine body; an inverter including a plurality of switching parts; and a control device. The control device is configured to: while a crankshaft is in forward rotation after a combustion operation of the four-stroke engine body is stopped, control the plurality of switching parts such that a resistance is applied to the forward rotation of the crankshaft by the three-phase brushless motor, forcing the crankshaft to stop in a compression stroke of the four-stroke engine body; and in response to reception of a start instruction under a state where the crankshaft is stopped, direct the three-phase brushless motor to start forward rotation of the crankshaft from a position where the crankshaft is stopped in the compression stroke.

    • To establish an initial/resting position of a permanent magnet rotor, all motor stator windings are stimulated (voltage applied thereto) in sequence, the time it takes for current in the stimulated stator winding to rise to a specific current value is measured for each stator winding and these time measurement results processed. From the measured time results rotor position to within 60 degrees is determined and the position sector is known prior to starting/rotating the motor. Once the rotor position is known, the next commutation point in a six step sequence is known before actually starting/rotating the motor. Position measurement winding stimulation may be interleaved with commutation pulses, or the unexcited stator winding may be stimulated between commutation pulses to the other two excited stator, wherein one of the two stator windings remains connected to the power and provides a current return path to the unexcited but stimulated stator winding.

      The drive circuit comprises a two-stage amplifying circuit comprised of transistors 13 and 14 for switching and amplifying a drive current to drive coils 11; a detecting coil 15 disposed together with the drive coils in a magnetic field of permanent magnets in a rotor, and connected to a base of the transistor 14 at one end; and a diode connected in series with the other end of the detecting coil 15 and provided between the base and an emitter of the transistor 14, wherein the diode controls and adjusts a base current of the transistor 14 such that the transistor 14 is turned on when induced electromotive force generated in the detecting coil 15 is a reverse voltage, and such that the transistor 14 is turned off when the induced electromotive force of the detecting coil 15 is a forward voltage.
