    • A swashplate centering and holddown mechanism (55) for an axial piston unit (11) comprising a cylinder barrel (29) disposed for rotation about an axis of rotation (A). A cam member (39) is tiltable about a transverse axis and has a swashplate (37). The swashplate (37) is perpendicular to the axis of rotation (A), in a neutral position, and has a displaced position (FIG. 4). The swashplate centering and holddown mechanism biases the cam member (39) axially toward a cradle surface (41) and pivotably toward the neutral position (FIG. 3). The mechanism (55) comprises a pair of arms (67,69), each of which defines a pivot location (71,73), at one axial end thereof, fixed relative to a pump housing (19) on one side of the axis of rotation (A), and a swashplate-engaging portion (95,97), at the opposite axial end thereof, engaging the swashplate, on the other side of said axis of rotation (A), when said swashplate is in neutral. A connector (79) is operably associated with the arms (67,69), whereby the arms are able to pivot about the pivot locations (71,73) in a generally scissors-type movement. A pair of springs (63,65) biases the swashplate-engaging portions of the arms toward the swashplate (37), whereby, in the absence of an input to tilt the cam member (39), the swashplate is in engagement with both of said swashplate-engaging portions (95,97) and is in the neutral position (FIG. 3).

    • A housing includes a crank chamber and cylinder bores. Pistons are accommodated in the cylinder bores. A drive shaft is supported by the housing to pass through the crank chamber. A lug plate is fixed to the drive shaft. The pistons are coupled to the lug plate, which converts rotation of the drive shaft into reciprocation of the pistons and compresses gas in the cylinder bores. A thrust bearing is located between the housing and the lug plate and transmits a thrust load applied to the lug plate. The thrust bearing includes a front race located next to the housing, a rear race located next to the lug plate, and rollers located between the front and rear races. A front seat for supporting the front race is formed on the housing. A rear seat for supporting the rear race is formed on the lug plate. The diameters of the front and rear seats are different, which causes elastic deformation of the races when a thrust load is applied.

    • The durability of a coating layer formed on the sliding surface between two members of a compressor, and the sliding contact between the two members, is kept excellent over a long period of time. In a peripheral portion 10d of a swash plate 10, a pair of shoes 20 are connected to the swash plate 10 while intervening between the swash plate 10 and a piston 8. Both the swash plate 10 and the shoes 20 are formed from an iron series material. A film 23 is formed on both surfaces 22 of the peripheral portion 10d of the swash plate 10, and the shoes 20 slide on the film 23 on the swash plate 10. The film 23 is a coating layer formed from a resin containing metallic particles. The particle size of the metallic particles is larger than the thickness of the film 23 (e.g., from 10 to 100 &mgr;m), and the surface of the film 23 is made smooth by polishing. The resin functioning as a binder of the metallic particles is formed from, for example, a polyimide resin.

    • In a housing of an axle driving apparatus whose interior space serves as a fluid sump is disposed a center section in which a pair of fluid passages are formed so as to serve as a closed fluid circuit connecting a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor therethrough. In the housing are also disposed a movable swash plate for adjusting an amount of fluid discharged from the hydraulic pump, and a pivotal control arm for operating the swash plate. The control arm includes a fluid groove in constant communication with the fluid sump. Either of a pair of orifices is brought into communication with the fluid groove of the control arm when the control arm is located in a certain range. Each of a pair of check valves is interposed between each of the orifices and each of the fluid passages. The check valve allows fluid to flow from the fluid passage to the orifice, and stops flow of fluid from the orifice to the fluid passage. The pair of orifices may be respectively provided in a pair of pistons axially slidably inserted in the center section and biased so as to slidably and constantly abut against the control arm. The pair of check valves may be disposed in the respective pistons. Alternatively, the pair of check valves may be disposed in the center section so that each of the check valves is located between each of the pistons and each of the fluid passages.

    • A hydrostatic transmission is provided comprising a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor fluidly connected with each other through a closed fluid circuit. Pistons press against a control arm connected with a movable swash plate of the hydraulic pump and generate a friction force when the movable swash plate, which has been rotated slantwise, automatically returns toward the neutral position by a neutral return spring. The movable swash plate gradually returns to the neutral position by pressure of the piston. A discharging oil hole is open at the utmost end of each of the pistons for draining a portion of operating oil which operates the piston in the closed fluid circuit to the interior of a housing. Grooves are formed along a surface of the control arm abutting against the pistons. When the movable swash plate is rotated between the neutral position and a predetermined position, the discharging oil holes are connected to the interior of the housing through the grooves so as to release the oil pressure out of the closed fluid circuit. Thus, braking shock can be moderated and the neutral position can be expanded.
