    • A tool for retrieving metal objects from a wellbore has a plurality of magnet assemblies spaced longitudinally along a tool body. Each magnet assembly has a plurality of magnet members, which can be arcuate or longitudinal, covering a majority surface area of the tool body. In the embodiment of the invention having longitudinal members, magnet protectors are secured immediately adjacent to a corresponding magnet member for deflecting striking force of the metal particles being attracted to the magnet during rotation of the tool. A trap space if formed between the magnet and an adjacent magnet protector for retaining more metal particles within the magnet assemblies.

    • A polycrystalline diamond enhanced insert is disclosed. The insert includes a body portion adapted for attachment to an earth-boring bit and a top portion for contacting an earthen formation. The top portion of the insert is provided with two different compositions of polycrystalline diamond. In the primary surface of the top portion, a tougher or less wear-resistant polycrystalline diamond layer is provided, whereas a more wear-resistant polycrystalline diamond layer is provided in the remaining region of the top portion. In addition to polycrystalline diamond, polycrystalline boron nitride and other superhard materials also may be used.

    • A method for applying hardfacing to teeth on a drill bit is disclosed. The method includes applying the hardfacing to at least one of the teeth so as to have a thickness selected to correspond to a position about exterior surface of the tooth. In one embodiment, the hardfacing thickness is increased near the crest of the tooth, and is decreased near the root of the tooth on at least one flank of the tooth. In one embodiment, the thickness is selected by controlling the powder flow rate in a plasma transferred arc welding system. In another embodiment an angle subtended by flanks of the tooth is selected to provide increased strength to the tooth, and the hardfacing is applied to the tooth to cause exterior surfaces of the hardfacing corresponding to the flanks to subtend an angle selected to provide increased penetration of the tooth through earth formations while drilling.
