    • Conventional direct-injection internal combustion engines having a fuel injector with multiple fuel spray orifices will not completely ignite and burn relatively lower-cetane-number alternative fuels such as 100 percent methanol or ethanol. That is because the fuel spray injection pattern, per se, usually cannot carry or propagate a flame to all the injected fuel which is typically made up of individual fuel streams which are separated by sectors of fuel-deficient intake air. The present fuel combustion system (10) includes a multiple-orifice fuel injector (22), a baffle (138) having a concave surface (146), and a fuel ignition-initiating device (22) such as glow plug positioned generally in spaced relation between the fuel injector (22) and the concave surface (146). The baffle (138) intercepts and temporarily maintains a stoichiometric preselected portion (34,38) of at least one, and preferably two, fuel streams (102,106) in ignitable proximity to the fuel ignition-initiating device (26) to positively start a localized flame (42) of burning fuel. The baffle (138) controlledly reflects and rapidly directs the resultant expanding flame (42) of burning fuel to all of the remaining fuel streams (110) so that they are interconnectedly bridged with the flame (42) and thereby positively ignited.

    • Mixing a pumped fluid with a lubrication fluid within a pump can undermine the lubricity of the lubrication fluid. In order to reduce mixing of fluids within a pump of the present disclosure, a pump is provided that comprises a housing, a piston, a first annulus, and a second annulus. The housing includes an inlet for the pumped fluid, an inlet for the lubrication fluid provided at a first pressure, and a piston bore fluidly coupled to the inlet for the pumped fluid. The piston is moveable within the piston bore. The first annulus is fluidly coupled to the inlet for the lubrication fluid. The second annulus is configured to be fluidly coupled to a drain circuit provided at a second pressure less than the first pressure. The first annulus and the second annulus are located along the length of the piston bore.

    • A check valve assembly is disposed in a flow path of a high pressure hydraulic actuating system between a source of pressurized fluid and a pressure responsive mechanism to limit flow to a single direction therebetween. A valve housing defines a fluid passage therethrough with a first axis therealong. The fluid passage has an annular first seat surface normal to the axis. A fitting is fixed to the valve housing and has a post directed toward fluid flow from the source of pressurized fluid. A check valve assembly slidably translates on the post between a closed position abutting the first seat surface which restricts flow toward the pressure source, and an open position spaced from the first seat surface which permits flow toward the pressure responsive mechanism. A spring disposed between the fitting and the check biases the check to the closed position.

    • A pressure control system for controlling output pressure of a variable-displacement hydraulic pump used with a hydraulically-actuated electronically-controlled injector fuel system and method of operation is disclosed. The control system comprises a variable-displacement hydraulic pump with a control element adjustable to a range of positions which controls an output of the pump. The control system additionally includes positioning means for positioning the control element responsive to pressure differences between the fluid reference chamber and the output port. Electronic valve means regulates a pressure of hydraulic actuating fluid in the fluid reference chamber. The electronic valve means is electronically connected with the electronic control means to receive the output signal. A change in the output signal to the electrical valve means produces a change in the pressure of the hydraulic actuating fluid in the fluid reference chamber, thereby causing the positioning means to operably position the control element to change the output of the pump.
