摘要： To enable bonding flat and corrugated sheets at their contact points by laser welding or other welding methods while laminating and spirally winding the sheets, a process of producing a metal catalyst carrier for exhaust gas purification in the form of a metal honeycomb column composed of flat and corrugated metal sheets alternately laminated, wound together, and bonded to each other, the process includes the steps of: forming plural openings in a flat sheet of a metal; laminating one piece of the flat sheet having the openings formed therein and one piece of a corrugated sheet of a metal and bonding the laminated flat and corrugated sheets to each other to form a composite sheet; and spirally winding the composite sheet around an axis to form columnar turns each composed of an outer flat layer composed of the flat sheet and an inner corrugated layer composed of the corrugated sheet, while bonding an outer turn and an adjoining inner turn by welding an inner corrugated layer of the outer turn, in a portion exposed in one of the openings of an outer flat layer of the outer turn, to an outer flat layer of the adjoining inner turn through said one of the openings to bond the outer turn and the adjoining inner turn.

摘要： An exhaust gas purifying apparatus includes a carrier of a honeycomb structure which is made of at least one flat metal plate and at least one corrugated metal plate which is superimposed on the flat metal plate. A catalytic layer is formed on the surface of the carrier. The carrier suited for being coated with the catalytic layer is disposed in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. The carrier is provided, on an axially intermediate portion thereof, with a large number of louvers which causes a haphazard secondary motion in the exhaust gas. A predetermined portion of the carrier including the turbulence producing portion and an additional region located adjacent to said predetermined region is coated with a larger amount of catalyst than that with which the remaining portion of the carrier is coated, whereby good purifying efficiency can be obtained for a long time.

摘要： A flat-corrugated combined sheet 16 is obtained from a flat sheet 10 and corrugated sheets 12 and 14 which are welded together. The combined sheet 16 is rolled, so that a catalyst carrier 18 of a honeycomb structure to which an exhaust gas is contacted is obtained. At a middle part of the catalyst carrier 18, the flat sheet 10 has a section 10-1 free of corrugated sheet, and is formed with louvers 21, so that, in the rolled state, a turbulence generating section 30 is created. At a location upstream from the turbulence generating section 30, the flat sheet 10 has spaced sections 10-2 free of corrugated sheet, so that, in the rolled state, low flow-resistance sections 22 are created. The dissipation of heat of the exhaust gas is reduced at the sections 22, so that the temperature of the exhaust gas introduced into the turbulence generating section 30 at locations downstream from the low flow-resistance sections 22 is high, thereby promoting an activation of the catalyst at the section 30.

摘要： An electric heater comprises a central electrode and a ring electrode with a honeycomb heat generator disposed therebetween. The honeycomb heat generator is formed by winding a conductive foil strip around the central electrode until the size of the rolled honeycomb body just fits to the ring electrode. The surface of the conductive foil strip is coated by an insulating material, thereby preventing a short circuit between two layers of the conductive foil strip wound around the central electrode. A plurality of bonding parts are provided to electrically connect adjacent layers of the conductive foil strip wound around the central electrode. The bonding parts are disposed along a plurality of bonding lines extending across the layers of the conductive foil strip. The bonding parts are disposed on every other bonding line along each layer of the conductive foil strip.
