    • To enable bonding flat and corrugated sheets at their contact points by laser welding or other welding methods while laminating and spirally winding the sheets, a process of producing a metal catalyst carrier for exhaust gas purification in the form of a metal honeycomb column composed of flat and corrugated metal sheets alternately laminated, wound together, and bonded to each other, the process includes the steps of: forming plural openings in a flat sheet of a metal; laminating one piece of the flat sheet having the openings formed therein and one piece of a corrugated sheet of a metal and bonding the laminated flat and corrugated sheets to each other to form a composite sheet; and spirally winding the composite sheet around an axis to form columnar turns each composed of an outer flat layer composed of the flat sheet and an inner corrugated layer composed of the corrugated sheet, while bonding an outer turn and an adjoining inner turn by welding an inner corrugated layer of the outer turn, in a portion exposed in one of the openings of an outer flat layer of the outer turn, to an outer flat layer of the adjoining inner turn through said one of the openings to bond the outer turn and the adjoining inner turn.

    • An electrically heated catalytic converter having a substrate for a catalyst, a rod-like metal electrode connected to the substrate, and a casing accommodating the substrate. The substrate for the catalyst is formed as a scroll-like cylindrical laminated assembly of thin metal sheets wound around the electrode. The electrode extends from the laminated assembly along the central axis, bends towards the wall of the casing and penetrates the casing. The electrode is fixed to the casing via an insulating material at the point where it penetrates the casing. When the electricity is fed to the electrode, electric current flows through the electrode to the laminated assembly, and to the casing, and heat is generated in the substrate by the electric current and the temperature of the catalyst carried by the substrate quickly reaches the activating temperature. The rod-like electrode of the present invention is formed as a hollow pipe. Since the heat mass of the hollow pipe electrode is very small compared with the solid metal rod electrode, only a small amount of the heat generated by the electric current is consumed for heating the electrode of the present invention. Therefore, a large amount of the heat generated by the electric current is used for heating the substrate for the catalyst, and the time required for heating the substrate for the catalyst is greatly reduced.

    • A power-saving type of ignition apparatus is provided with a spark plug of which electrodes (30, 40) are regulated in their shapes to lower an amount of energy required for its ignition. To face to a tip (31) of a center electrode (30) extending from a mounting bracket (10), a cylindrical protrusion (41) is built on one surface (43) of an earth electrode (40). The protrusion extends toward the center electrode to form a discharge gap (50) between the protrusion and the tip of the center electrode. Both of the tip of the center electrode and the protrusion of the earth electrode are 2.3 [mm] or less in each diameter (D1, D2), thus an amount of energy required for ignition being limited to 17 [mJ] or less.
