    • A method for regulating a generator is described in which the rectified output voltage furnished by the generator is converted, under certain preconditions, with the aid of a direct voltage converter. The generator can be operated either in a free operating mode or a regulated operating mode. If the generator voltage output in the particular operating state is not equivalent to the on-board electrical voltage, then the generator voltage is either raised or lowered with the aid of the voltage converter. The selection of the generator operating mode is done as a function of rpm or voltage, in such a way that the available generator power or energy conversion efficiency is as high as possible.

    • The apparatus for energy distribution in a motor vehicle includes a vehicle electrical power supply system (11) with a generator (13) regulated by a voltage regulator (21), a battery (12) and consumers and a control arrangement (10) receiving required information from the power supply system for determining control parameters for engine or power supply system components. The control arrangement (10) includes the voltage regulator (21) and a supply system managing device (20). The supply system managing device (20) includes a device (24) for establishing an energy management strategy and a pre-control device (23) for generating a differential output for input to the device (24) according to an actual power and required power with respect to reference voltage. The pre-control device (23) and the device (24) for establishing an energy management strategy cooperate to determine a power supply set voltage (U_s) from the required information. The power supply set voltage (U_s) is compared with a measured actual voltage (U_ist) to produce a comparison results and the voltage regulator (21) regulates the generator according to the comparison result.

    • An electrical voltage supply system includes an alternator having phase windings, it being possible to connect the alternator to a battery, and which is part of a first vehicle electrical system. The output of the alternator leads via a rectifier bridge and a voltage transformer operating as a step-up transformer to a second vehicle electrical system which has a markedly higher voltage and has usually no battery. To supply voltage to the loads of the vehicle electrical system which is operated at a higher voltage even during a standstill of the alternator, the alternator is then connected to the battery of the vehicle electrical system, and the higher voltage is obtained with the assistance of the step-up transformer, the step-up transformer operating in such a manner that is uses the alternator inductance as a choke.
