After comparing the A/F limitation additional quantity to a required additional quantity which is calculated from an engine speed and the in-cylinder injection quantity, the quantity of whichever less is accumulated every predetermined period of time, and the time point when the accumulated quantity reaches a predetermined reference additional quantity permits the addition of fuel from a fuel addition valve 12.

      SOLUTION: This exhaust recirculation device of the internal combustion engine is constituted such that, in the recirculation passage (EGR passage) 30 of an engine 1, an electric heater 31, a particulate filter 32, an EGE cooler 33, an EGR valve 34 are sequentially arranged to an upstream side to a downstream side along a flowing direction of a gas (EGR gas) flowing in the recirculation passage 30. An electric control unit 20 switches an energizing state (ON/OFF) of the electric heater 31 based on a temperature of a downstream side of the particulate filter 32 of the EGR passage 30. Accordingly, even under a condition in which a temperature of an exhaust gas (EGR gas) flowing in the EGR passage 30 is low, the particulate filter 32 can efficiently function without clogging of the particulate filter 32.
