    • An irrigated ablation electrode assembly (10) includes a substantially polygonal shaped electrode. The electrode assembly includes a proximal member (16), also referred to as a proximal portion having an outer body portion (20) including an outer distal end surface (22) and an inner cavity (24) within the outer body portion and at least one passageway for fluid. The passageway extends from the inner cavity to the outer distal end surface (22) of the proximal member. The electrode assembly further includes a distal member (18) or portion defined by a substantially polygonal shaped body. Irrigation fluid flows from the inner cavity of the proximal member through the passageway and through an orifice of the proximal member. The fluid that exits out of the passageways flows substantially parallel to the body of the distal member, therein improving or optimizing the irrigation of the substantially polygonal shaped electrode (28).

    • Embodiments of the present invention provide an irrigated catheter having irrigation fluid directed at target areas where coagulation is more likely to occur so as to minimize blood coagulation and the associated problems. In one embodiment, an irrigated ablation electrode assembly (11) for use with an irrigated catheter device comprises a proximal member (20) having at least one passageway (24) for a fluid with an outlet (22) disposed at an external surface of the proximal member (20); and a distal member (18) connected with the proximal member (20) and having an external surface. The distal member (18) includes an electrode. The external surface of the proximal member (20) and the external surface of the distal member (18) meet at an intersection. The at least one passageway (24) of the proximal member is configured to direct a fluid flow through the outlet (22) toward a region adjacent the intersection.
