    • The present invention relates to improved ablation electrodes (10, 10') and catheter assemblies (12), as well as methods useful in conjunction with irrigated ablation catheters. An irrigated ablation electrode assembly (10, 10') includes a proximal member (18, 18') having an outer surface (22), an inner lumen (26, 26') and a proximal passageway (24). The proximal passageway (24) extends from the inner lumen (26, 26') to the outer surface (22) of the proximal member (18, 18'). The assembly (10, 10') further includes a distal member (20) having a distal end (30) and a distal passageway (28) extending from the inner lumen (26, 26') through the distal member (20) to the distal end (30). Embodiments of the present invention include an irrigated catheter assembly (12) configured to direct irrigation fluid to target areas where coagulation is more likely to occur to, among other things, better minimize blood coagulation and associated problems.

    • The present invention provides an ablation catheter tip (50, 60, 70) for use with an irrigated catheter device (12) comprising an inner cavity (51, 61, 71) and at least one passageway (55, 65, 72) that leads to an orifice (56, 66, 73), wherein the fluid flow from the orifice promotes a circular, vortex, or spiral flow around the catheter tip from the acute angle formed at the orifice with respect to a line tangent to the surface of the ablation electrode at the orifice. The invention further provides an ablation catheter tip (80) comprising an inner cavity (81) and at least one curved passageway (82) that leads to an orifice, wherein a line drawn tangent to the arc of the curve forms an acute angle measured with respect to a line drawn tangent to surface of the ablation electrode at the orifice of the passageway.

    • Embodiments of the present invention provide an irrigated catheter having irrigation fluid directed at target areas where coagulation is more likely to occur so as to minimize blood coagulation and the associated problems. In one embodiment, an irrigated ablation electrode assembly (11) for use with an irrigated catheter device comprises a proximal member (20) having at least one passageway (24) for a fluid with an outlet (22) disposed at an external surface of the proximal member (20); and a distal member (18) connected with the proximal member (20) and having an external surface. The distal member (18) includes an electrode. The external surface of the proximal member (20) and the external surface of the distal member (18) meet at an intersection. The at least one passageway (24) of the proximal member is configured to direct a fluid flow through the outlet (22) toward a region adjacent the intersection.
