摘要： A method of translating a sentence including a compound word formed by hyphenation by using a translating apparatus which includes a dictionary look up and morpheme analyzer for looking up each word constituting an input sentence of a source language in a dictionary and providing a morpheme array of the input sentence from information obtained by looking up the dictionary, a syntax analyzer for analyzing a syntactic structure of the morpheme array provided by the dictionary look up and morpheme analyzer with dictionary and grammatical rules, a language converter for converting the syntactic structure analyzed by the syntax analyzer into a corresponding syntactic structure of a target language, and a language generator for generating a translation in accordance with the syntactic structure of the target language received from the language converter referring to the information obtained by looking up the dictionary.

摘要： A translation apparatus is provided for translating a sentence from an original language into a sentence of a target language. The translation apparatus has a computer which analyzes the original language sentence, and generates the target language sentence based on the analyzed original language sentence. During the translation, indicators are displayed on a screen for indicating that the analysis of the original language sentence is taking place, and other indicators are displayed for indicating that the generation of the target language sentence is taking place. These indicators will help the operator to know that the translation apparatus is properly operating for obtaining a translation result, particularly when the translation process is taking a long time.

摘要： An electronic dictionary for storing a plurality of items such as idioms, where each item includes an entry string and information associated with the entry string. The entry string includes a first representative symbol representing a plurality of words having a prescribed common attribute. The information may include more than one representative symbol with each representing a separate group of words having a common attribute. An information retrieval apparatus identifies an input character string and an entry string by regarding the first representative symbol as being the same as any one of the words which the symbol represents, and outputs the information corresponding to the identified entry string. The dictionary enables information to be stored more efficiently and economically.

摘要： A translation system for translating a sentence of an original language into a sentence of a target language utilizes a computer which pre-treats insertion marks. These insertion marks can be quotation marks, colons, semicolons or parentheses found in the original language sentence. The computer also post-treats the insertion marks to provide an appropriate translation of the insertion marks into the target language sentence. These translations of the insertion marks are carried out without carrying the insertion marks throughout the whole translation process.

摘要： A translation machine is arranged to derive two or more syntaxes from one original sentence, determine which of the syntaxes is the most approximate according to a syntax priority rule given by a user or a manufacturer and output a translated sentence based on the most approximate syntax. The translation machine includes a memory, a translating module and a main CPU as main components. The memory serves to store a partial structure of each syntax and a syntax priority rule containing a numerical value indicating a priority of the partial structure and an incidental condition of the syntax. The translating module serves to collide the syntax priority rule stored in the memory with the syntax of the original sentence and giving a proper evaluating value to the syntax of the original sentence. The main CPU serves to output the translated sentences on the syntaxes derived from the original sentence according to their larger evaluating values.
