摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a ceramic scintillator having high light-emission intensity, extremely low scattering of the intensity and excellent uniformity, by adopting a pressing mechanism with a hydrostatic press in the vacuum sealing step in the sintering of a rare-earth metal oxysulfide by HIP process. CONSTITUTION:A rare-earth metal oxysulfide 1 is vacuum-sealed in a metal capsule 2 and sintered under pressure. In the above process, the vacuum-sealing of the metal capsule is performed with a pressing mechanism without applying vibration to the metal capsule. A sealed part 9 can be formed at the tip end of a pipe 3 by using a hydraulic press 6 as a pressing means 7 and pressing the vacuum-sealing part 5 of the pipe 3 protruded from the metal capsule 2 with a cylindrical cemented carbide tip 8.

CONSTITUTION:In the production of rare earth oxysulfide (hereinafter referred to as Gd2O2S) sintered compact by filling Gd2O2S powder in the metal capsule, by sealing after making the capsule vacuous and by heating and pressing, the substance having higher vapor pressure of sulfur at >=500 deg.C than that of Gd2O2S (e.g., FeS2, CuS, Ag2S, PbS) is made to coexist in the capsule. Thereby, the decomposition of Gd2O2S at a high temp. is suppressed and the scattering of the characteristics of Gd2O2S sintered compact is remarkably decreased to obtain the sintered compact suitable as scintillator for X-ray CT.

摘要： PURPOSE:To make it possible to produce a high-quality crack-free ceramic scintillator, by using a metal having a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially equal to that of the sintered substance as the raw material for a metallic capsule in which the material is packed in sintering a rare earth oxysulfide by the HIP method. CONSTITUTION:In sintering a rare earth oxysulfide [e.g., a compound of the formula (wherein x is in the range of 3X10 , and the amount of F is 2-1000ppm)] by the hot isostatic press method (hereinbelow referred to as HIP), a metal having a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially equal to that of the sintered substance is used as the raw material for a metallic capsule in which the material is packed together with a sintering aid (e.g., Li2GeF6). For instance, iron-nickel steel is the most suitable for the rare earth oxysulfide of the above formula. By performing HIP by using this capsule, a crack-free ceramic scintillator can be made in good yields. Therefore, the ceramic scintillator obtained above is suitable as a material for a radiation-detecting element for X-ray CT.

Under a condition where apex positions of the inner needle 20 and the outer needle 10 are joined, a needle-like ultrasonic probe is pierced into the object to be examined and when the apex of the inner needle 20 reaches a site to be observed, it is stopped. Thereafter, when the outer needle 10 is pierced furthermore to an inner position to be observed, the tissue of living body at the position to be observed is introduced into the hollow outer needle 10 to result in a condition where this is placed up and down between a plurality of the facing pairs of the ultrasonic convertors. Under this condition, sound characteristics of the tissue of the living body introduced into the outer needle 10 are measured.
