摘要： A magnetic head includes a tunnel valve sensor, a first shield coupled to a first end of the tunnel valve sensor, and a second shield coupled to a second end of the tunnel valve sensor. A first connecting column electrically couples the first shield to a first read pad, and a second connecting column electrically couples the second shield to a second read pad. However, the first connecting column is magnetically uncoupled from the first shield and the second connecting column is magnetically uncoupled from the second shield. Advantageously, this eliminates or substantially reduces the influence of the connecting columns (which may be made in part from the same magnetic materials as the pole pieces) on the magnetic properties of the shields. In one example, the first connecting column is offset from the first shield and is coupled to it through a first connecting neck, and similarly the second connecting column is offset from the second shield and is coupled to it through a second connecting neck. In another example, the first and the second shields are made of a magnetic material whereas the first and the second connecting columns are made of a non-magnetic electrically conductive material.

摘要： A magnetic write head having a vertically laminated back gap structure and method of making the same are disclosed. The magnetic head is formed with lower and upper pole pieces and a back gap structure which connects the lower and the upper pole pieces in a back gap region. In one illustrative example, the back gap is a vertically laminated structure having alternating layers of magnetic and non-magnetic materials. Each alternating layer is perpendicular to both the lower and the upper pole pieces. This vertically laminated structure significantly reduces the eddy currents in the back gap region at high operating frequencies as the layers are oriented in a direction parallel with the magnetic flux.

摘要： A magnetic write head for perpendicular magnetic data recording. The write head includes a substrate and a magnetic write pole formed on the substrate, the write pole having a trailing edge and first and second sides. A magnetic stitched pole is formed over a portion of the magnetic write pole, the stitched pole having a front edge that defines a secondary flare point. First and second non-magnetic side walls are formed at the first and second sides of the write pole. The non-magnetic side walls extend from the substrate at least to the trailing edge of the write pole in a first region near an air bearing surface and wherein the first and second non-magnetic side walls extend from the substrate to a point between the substrate and the trailing edge, allowing the stitched magnetic pole to extend partially over the sides of the write pole.

The method includes the construction of a lapping guide having an edge feature that is easily and accurately located relative to the flare point of the write pole. This edge feature provides an abrupt change in electrical resistance across the lapping guide at a point when lapping should be terminated. And, since this feature can accurately located relative to the flare point, this provides an easily discernable ending point for lapping.

The write head has a return pole with a magnetic pedestal formed at the air bearing surface (ABS) and a back gap at an end opposite the ABS. An electrically conductive write coil having a plurality of turns passes over the return pole. A fill layer of a material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, such as alumina is disposed between the coil and the pedestal, and may extend over the top of the coil to the back gap. A photoresist coil insulation layer may be provided between the turns of the coil to insulate the turns of the coil from one another. The photoresist coil insulation layer can also extend to the back gap. A write pole, formed above the return pole and coil is magnetically connected with the back gap layer and return pole by a magnetic shaping layer.
