摘要： Impact-modified polystyrene resins such as HIPS and ABS resins are blended with a brominated vinyl aromatic-butadiene copolymer. The brominated copolymer is an effective flame retardant in these compositions, allowing in many cases a V-1 rating to be achieved in the UL-94 vertical burn test.

摘要： Phosphorus-sulfur compounds have flame retardant activity in organic polymer systems. The phosphorus-sulfur compounds can be represented by the structure: (F) wherein X is oxygen or sulfur, T is a covalent bond, oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen, provided that at least one of X and T is sulfur, each X' is independently oxygen or sulfur, each m is independently zero or 1 when X' is oxygen and zero, 1 or 2 when X' is sulfur, n is at least 1 and preferably at least 2, each R is independently an unsubstituted or inertly substituted hydrocarbyl group or the R groups together form an unsubstituted or inertly substituted divalent organic group and A is an organic linking group.

摘要： Butadiene polymers are brominated using tetraethylammonium tribromide as the brominating agent. The bromination is performed in a solvent for the starting polymer and for the tetraethylammonium bromide that is formed as a reaction byproduct. The process proceeds easily under mild conditions. In some cases, a solution of the brominated polymer and the tetraethylammonium monobromide is produced; this solution separates into a layer that contains the brominated polymer and another layer that contains most or all of the tetraethylammonium monobromide salt. In other cases, the brominated polymer precipitates from the reaction mixture and is separated from the tetraethylammonium monobromide salt in that manner. This process therefore permits the tetraethylammonium monobromide reaction by-product to be separated easily from the brominated product, and allows aqueous washing steps to be reduced or eliminated.

摘要： Brominated styrene-butadiene copolymers are recovered from solutions in a halogenated solvent by an anti-solvent precipitation process. The precipitation process is performed by adding the anti-solvent to the brominated styrene-butadiene copolymer solution. By performing the precipitation using this specific order of addition, a denser product is obtained that is easier to dry. The recovered product shows a reduced tendency to act as a nucleating agent when it is used as a flame retardant additive in an extrusion foaming process.

摘要： The present invention is a halogen-free ignition resistant polymer composition comprising: A) a thermoplastic polymer or polymer blend, B) a modified multi-functional epoxy resin containing from 0-20 wt. percent residual epoxy groups, based on the total weight of the epoxy resin, and C) a phosphorus containing compound. The use of a modified multifunctional epoxy compound having from 0-20 weight percent residual epoxy groups, enhances the flame retardancy of the thermoplastic polymer, and can increase the compatibility of the epoxy resin with the thermoplastic polymer through the use of the modified functionalities, without causing black specks in the final product. It has been additionally discovered that modified multi-functional epoxy resins can also contribute to improved mechanical properties, melt flow rate and processability.
