    • A multifunctional multichip system can operate in a passive mode by using at least one antenna to receive electromagnetic energy and using that energy to perform system functions. The system includes a sensor, an impedance matching circuit and an RFID module. The sensor produces a sensor signal containing a measurement. The RFID can produce an identification signal containing identification information. Alternatively, the RFID chip can be used in an addressing mode wherein the system only produces a signal in response to an addressing signal containing addressing information. The addressing signal is received from the electromagnetic field. In either mode, the sensor signal is coupled from the antenna into the electromagnetic field from which a receiver can obtain it. The signal can contain the identification information as well as the measurement. A matching network minimizes the effects of impedance mismatches between the system elements.

An illustrative SAW sensor can include an electrode structure that transmits and receives surface acoustic waves along a SAW delay line, a temperature sensor for measuring temperature along a first direction of the SAW delay line, and a pressure sensor for measuring pressure along a second direction of the SAW delay line. The SAW sensor can include an antenna that wirelessly transmits and receives RF signals to and from an electrical interrogator unit that can be used to power the SAW sensor.

    • An expansion shell assembly for mine roof bolts includes an expansion member threaded onto an associated mine roof bolt. A support device is annularly disposed around the associated roof bolt. An expansion shell is annularly disposed around the associated roof bolt between the expansion member and the support device. The expansion shell has a base ring for engaging the support device and fingers for engaging a peripheral edge of the tapered plug. The engagement between the base ring and the support device permits axial traverse movement of the support device relative to the expansion shell for tensioning the roof bolt.

    • A hand held laser apparatus containing a semiconductor laser diode switchably connected to a power supply. The output of the laser diode is focused and collimated by a pair of lens. Circuitry is provided to allow for either continuous wave or pulsed modes of operation as well as the capability of varying the pulsewidth of the laser. A guide laser or a light emitting diode is provided to guide the operator. The power level of the guide laser is limited so that it transfers minimal power to the workpiece but provides a visible line of laser light along which the output of the semiconductor laser diode will travel. A photodetector may be positioned between the laser diode and the lenses. Additionally, the amount of current delivered to the laser in continuous wave mode of operation or the pulse width and duty cycle of a pulse may be measured and displayed. Embodiments are provided incorporating a plurality of laser diodes to allow continued operation upon failure of a diode, increased power with the simultaneous use of the multiple diodes, or either alternate wavelength selection or wavelength mixing. Alternative embodiments operate at a predetermined voltage level. These embodiments may utilize a set of batteries such that the entire batteries and control circuitry may be contained either within a portable package or the hand held laser apparatus itself. Such alternative embodiments may be made so as to be disposable upon the discharge of their batteries or the exhaustion of the laser.
