    • Graft polymers are obtained by radically initiated polymerisation of (A) monomers or monomer mixtures of (a) 10 to 100 % by weight N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides having the formula (I), in which R stands for R and C1-C6 alkyl, (b) 0 to 90 % by weight other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers that may be copolymerised with monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 % by weight of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers that contain non-conjugated double bonds in their molecule, in the presence of (B) polymers that contain at least 3 units of a C2-C4 alkylene oxide and/or polytetrahydrofuranes, in a weight ratio (A):(B) equal to (95 to 10):(5 to 80). The group (IV) is then optionally separated from the polymerised monomer (a) of the graft polymer, forming at least units having the formula (1). Also disclosed are a process for preparing said graft polymers and their use as dry and wet strength-increasing agents, as fixatives for impurities and fillers, as retention and dewatering agents for paper-making, as promoters during paper, cardboard and paperboard diketen gluing, as pigment dispersants, as starch cationising agents and as auxiliary substances for producing paper tissues.
