摘要： A system according to one embodiment comprises a head having a perpendicular writer, the writer comprising: a first pole structure having a pole tip positioned towards an air bearing surface of the head, the first pole structure having a portion that is recessed from an extent of the pole tip closest the air bearing surface; a return pole having an end positioned towards the air bearing surface of the head; and a gap between the first pole structure and the return pole, wherein the recessed portion is recessed less than about 1.25 microns relative to the extent of the pole tip closest the air bearing surface. Additional embodiments as well as methods are presented.

摘要： A magnetic write head for perpendicular magnetic data recording. The write head includes a substrate and a magnetic write pole formed on the substrate, the write pole having a trailing edge and first and second sides. A magnetic stitched pole is formed over a portion of the magnetic write pole, the stitched pole having a front edge that defines a secondary flare point. First and second non-magnetic side walls are formed at the first and second sides of the write pole. The non-magnetic side walls extend from the substrate at least to the trailing edge of the write pole in a first region near an air bearing surface and wherein the first and second non-magnetic side walls extend from the substrate to a point between the substrate and the trailing edge, allowing the stitched magnetic pole to extend partially over the sides of the write pole.

摘要： A magnetic write pole having a structure that prevents thermally induced pole tip protrusion. The write head has a return pole with a magnetic pedestal formed at the air bearing surface (ABS) and a back gap at an end opposite the ABS. An electrically conductive write coil having a plurality of turns passes over the return pole. A fill layer of a material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, such as alumina is disposed between the coil and the pedestal, and may extend over the top of the coil to the back gap. A photoresist coil insulation layer may be provided between the turns of the coil to insulate the turns of the coil from one another. The photoresist coil insulation layer can also extend to the back gap. A write pole, formed above the return pole and coil is magnetically connected with the back gap layer and return pole by a magnetic shaping layer.

The magnetic head has a first pole piece and a second pole piece. The first pole piece includes a first bottom pole piece layer, a pedestal portion formed over the first bottom pole piece layer, and a notched top pole portion formed over the pedestal portion. A gap layer separates the second pole piece from the notched top pole portion. The pedestal portion has a first saturation magnetization MS1 and the top pole portion has a second saturation magnetization MS2 that is greater than the first saturation magnetization MS1. The top pole portion has a substantially planar top surface over which a portion of the gap layer and the second pole piece are formed.

摘要： A magnetic head structure for use in perpendicular magnetic recording. The magnetic head includes a magnetic write head having a return pole with a magnetic shunt structure extending from the back end opposite the ABS. The magnetic shunt structure prevents magnetic field from the write coil from reaching and affecting the read head. More specifically the shunt structure prevents magnetic field from the portion of the write coil beyond the back gap (as measured from the ABS) from magnetizing a magnetic shield of the read head. The shunt structure is also configured so as to avoid stray field writing. The size and shape of the shunt structure is therefore, limited to avoid attracting stray fields that might cause such stray field writing.

Another method for fabricating a magnetic head includes forming a first pole, forming a gap layer above the first pole, forming a second pole above the gap layer, forming a layer of photoresist above the second pole, patterning the photoresist such that the photoresist covers areas of the gap layer positioned towards the second pole, removing exposed portions of the gap layer, removing part of exposed portions of the first pole for forming steps in the first pole on opposite sides of the photoresist, removing the photoresist, and milling for creating a shoulder of the first pole tapering upwardly towards the cap.
