    • A connector has a terminal accommodating space (12) and a wire accommodating space (22). A terminal fitting (35) is accommodated in the terminal accommodating space (12) and a wire (30) is connected with the terminal fitting (35). The wire (35) is bent into the wire accommodating space (22) to form an L-shape. A bite-in portion (24) is formed on the inner surface of the wire accommodating space (22) for engaging the wire (30) on an inner side of the bend to plastically deform the wire (30). The engagement of the wire (30) by the bite-in portion (24) reduces the resilient restoring force of the wire (30). As a result, the resilient restoring force of the wire (30) is less likely to incline the terminal fitting (35) in the terminal accommodating space (12).

    • A holding tool (40) is inserted into a retainer-attaching hole or a holding tool-accommodating space (22) with the holding tool (40) supporting a short-circuit terminal (15) therein. The short-circuit terminal (15) is inserted into a cavity (14) in a connector housing (10) by pushing a rear end of the terminal (15) through a handling aperture (23) by means of a pushing pin (45). Since the terminal (15) is inserted into the connector housing (10) from its lower side, a front opening of the cavity (14) can be formed into the smallest size so that a short-circuit-releasing member (31) can enter the opening (20). Extraneous substances hardly enter the cavity (14) in the connector housing (10) through the opening (20). Also, since the handling aperture (23) may be formed into the smallest size so that the pushing pin (45) can enter the aperture (23), the connector housing (10) becomes a small size. Thus, the connector housing (10) can be prevented from becoming a large-sized configuration and from entrance of the extraneous substances through the front opening (20) of the cavity (14).

    • A horizontally inserted retainer is mounted in a housing, and can be moved between a temporary locked position which allows insertion and removal of female terminal fittings and a final locked position which retains the female terminal fittings in the housing. A front stop plate with insertion openings is provided on the retainer, and the insertion openings are offset from housing chambers containing female terminal fittings when the retainer is in the temporary locked position. A continuity test is carried out by inserting a test probe through the insertion openings when the retainer is in the temporary locked position. Since only a portion of the front rim of the female terminal fitting is accessible through the insertion opening, the test probe contacts the portion of the front rim and does not enter deeply into the female terminal fitting. Therefore, elastic connecting pieces of the female terminal fittings are not excessively bent, and the female terminal fittings are not damaged, during the continuity test.
