    • Various signal routing systems are disclosed. Some routing systems include a crosspoint switch or switching fabric for coupling input ports to output ports, allowing an input signal received at one of the input ports to be transported to one or more of the output ports. The systems may include aggregation or compression modules to allow multiple input signals to be combined into one or more compressed signals, which may be converted into optical signals for transmission to a communication network. In some embodiments, the communication network may include a packet switched router which extracts some of the input signals from the optical signals and produced corresponding packetized signals that are coupled to output ports Some routing system may include only a packet switched router. Some routing system may be configured to receive compressed or aggregated signals and to decompress or deaggregate such signals to form individual signal as output signals.

    • A system includes a programmable transmitter device (e.g., a PLD) connected to a programmable receiver device (e.g., another PLD) via a transmission medium for transmitting a high-speed data signal from the transmitter to the receiver. During a test mode of operation a low-speed communication link between the transmitter and receiver allows those devices to work together to transmit test signals having known characteristics from the transmitter to the receiver via the transmission medium, to analyze the test signals as received by the receiver, and to adjust at least some aspect of the system (e.g., equalizer circuitry in the receiver) to at least partly compensate for losses in the test signals as received by the receiver.

    • Circuitry for locating the boundaries of bytes in a data stream is provided. The data stream typically has comma or header information that provides an indication of the byte boundaries. When circuitry detects this information, it can align the byte boundaries and thereby provide byte-aligned data to utilization circuitry (e.g., a programmable logic device). In accordance with this invention, circuitry can select different special characters for use in detecting the byte boundaries, where the special characters are different lengths. Circuitry aligns the byte boundaries based on the selected special character when enabled by a control signal. Once aligned, circuitry can provide a signal indicating which special character was used to align the boundaries. Another advantage of the invention is that it eliminates alignment problems associated with system latency. Circuitry automatically locks alignment to a first instance of a detected special character independent of an external control signal.
