    • An infusion system defines a fill path (4) for an infusion liquid from a source (5) to a displacement volume in a fluid chamber (8) of an infusion pump (1), and an infusion path (2) from the displacement volume to a connector (19a). The infusion pump (1) is operated to repeatedly draw infusion liquid from the source (5) into the displacement volume via the fill path (4) and push infusion liquid from the displacement volume through the connector (19a) via the infusion path (2). A controller (11) selectively effects a priming operation, by operating the infusion pump (1) to generate a priming fill stroke, in which a priming volume of the infusion liquid is drawn from the source (5) to the displacement volume, and a priming pump stroke, in which at least part of the priming volume is pushed from the displacement volume back to the source (5). The infusion system is thereby operable to be primed automatically, and proper priming may be verified by evaluating a measurement signal representative of fluid pressure in the displacement volume during either of the priming fill stroke and the priming pump stroke.

    • An infusion system is controlled by driving a displacing element (3) in alternate fill and pump directions in a fluid chamber (8) to define a varying displacement volume, and by synchronously operating a valve arrangement (6, 7) to alternately open and close first and second fluid paths (4, 2) from the fluid chamber (8) to a source (5) and a connector (19a), respectively, such that an infusion liquid is repeatedly sucked into the fluid chamber (8) from the source (5) and pumped from the fluid chamber (8) through the connector (19a). The infusion system comprises a sensor (12) for generating a measurement signal representative of fluid pressure in the displacement volume. A controller (11) is connected to intermittently effect a system test, in which the valve arrangement (6, 7) is operated to close the second fluid path (2); the displacing element (3) is driven a given distance in the fill direction; and the measurement signal is obtained from the sensor (12) during at least part of the system test. The integrity of the infusion system is determined based on the measurement signal, e.g. by evaluating the temporal change in the measurement signal during and/or after the displacement. The system test may identify a shortage of infusion liquid in the source (5) or a leakage of air into the first fluid path (4).

    • A disposable for use in blood treatment comprises a blood treatment unit (8) and a pump arrangement (11) operable to pump blood through the blood treatment unit (8). The pump arrangement (11) comprises two membrane pumps (6, 7) connected in parallel on one side of the blood treatment unit (8). The disposable is operable in a single-needle mode, in which the pump arrangement (11) is operable to generate a pulsatile flow of blood through the blood treatment unit (8), and in a double-needle mode, in which the pump arrangement (11) is operable to generate an essentially continuous flow of blood through the blood treatment unit (8). The pump arrangement (11) is configured for connection to a supply system (1) of treatment fluid for the blood treatment unit (8) such that alternating flows of treatment fluid generated by the supply system (1) and supplied to the first and second membrane pumps (6, 7) causes the pump arrangement (11) to generate the desired flows of blood in the single-needle and double- needle modes. The treatment fluid may be used as motive fluid for displacing the blood in the membrane pumps (6, 7) and/or as control fluid for controlling opening and/or closing of upstream and downstream commutation valves (34, 35) in the membrane pumps (6, 7).
