Target air amount for achieving the required torque is calculated back from the required torque by using a virtual air-fuel ratio. Virtual air-fuel ratio, in response to the conditions for switching the operation mode from the operation by the first air-fuel ratio to the driver by the second air-fuel ratio is satisfied, is changed from the first air-fuel ratio to the second air-fuel ratio. Then, after the virtual air-fuel ratio is changed from the first air-fuel ratio to the second air-fuel ratio, the target air-fuel ratio is varied in accordance with the air-fuel ratio efficiency in the range of from the first air-fuel ratio to the second air-fuel ratio. Air-fuel ratio efficiency is calculated from the ratio of the required torque for the torque that can be achieved by the current estimated amount of air under the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and optimum ignition timing.
