摘要： Systems and methods are provided for translating sounds, e.g., vowel sounds of speech, into two-dimensional patterns of haptic stimulus. A audio signal or information determined therefrom (e.g., a spectrum) is applied to an artificial neural network or other trained encoder to generate a location in a two-dimensional vowel space that represents the input audio signal. A two-dimensional array of haptic actuators is then operated to provide haptic stimulus at the determined location on a user's skin. The magnitude of the provided stimulus is determined based on the overall energy in the input sound signal, e.g., an energy within a vowel -related band of frequencies. Using a trained encoder to map the input audio signal into a two-dimensional haptic stimulus provides an easily understood stimulus related to the identity of detected vowel or other speech sounds over time, allowing the user to more easily detect and interpret speech.

The arrangement includes an electrode array with an outer surface having electrode contacts to apply cochlear stimulation signals to target neural tissue within an implanted patient cochlea. An electrode lead delivers the cochlear stimulation signals from an implanted signal processor to the electrode array. An electrode transition section includes a distal end portion of the electrode lead that is connected to a basal end portion of the electrode array. An electrode storage device contains the electrode transition section and is secured at an electrode opening in an outer surface of the patient cochlea. The electrode storage device is controllable after being surgically implanted to further insert an additional section of the electrode array from the electrode storage device into the patient cochlea and thereby implant a greater portion of the electrode array more deeply into the patient cochlea.

摘要： Multi-component systems and methods for determining the proximity of surgical tools to key anatomical features are provided. The inventive systems and methods can be applied in any surgical procedure requiring precision to avoid damage to key anatomical features such as nerves, with a particular example being the robotic cochlear implantation minimally invasive approach to cochlear implantation. Use of purpose built surgical robots, electromyography and tissue impedance, stereotactic tracking and drilling force/bone density measurements are all key components, with inputs from these various modalities being dynamically weighted. In the example of robotic cochlear implantation, the inventive concepts are used to provide key surgical guidance so as to avoid damage to the facial nerve and the chorda tympani, among other anatomical features.

Cochlear surface electrode(s), endosteal electrode(s), subendosteal electrode(s), intraosseous electrode(s), or short intracochlear electrode(s) (or a combination thereof), connected to existing or modified cochlear implant receiver/stimulator technology, can provide a successful model for long-term treatment of tinnitus in a large number of patients. In some cases, patients can simply turn on the tinnitus implant when experiencing troublesome tinnitus and gain instant relief.
