    • A self-contained vertical bearing assembly (10), which includes a shaft (5) carrying a collar flange (13) by which it is supported on bearing thrust pads (22) (figure 2) and spaced from surrounding stator wall (36) within a lubricant bath, has in stator wall (36) recesses such as (37) which define viscosity pumps that deliver lubricant from the bath to utilisation means, such as a heat exchanger (43) or lubrication gallery for a bearing part (69), as the shaft rotates.
