    • Disclosed is an ergonomically improved hypodermic syringe (10) which facilitates one handed use by allowing the same hand that holds the syringe to operate the plunger (20) conveniently to accomplish both the distal (injecting) stroke, and the proximal (aspirating) stroke. The syringe includes a pair (6, 7) of finger stop structures on diametrically opposite sides of the barrel which block slippage in both proximal and distal directions, which do not occupy the barrel's entire circumference, and do not interfere with the legibility of a calibration scale (11) that passes through the region of the barrel with which said structures are associated. A loop (25, 26) atop the syringe's plunger member is also provided, which is adjustable to vary the size of the aperture thereof for a snug fit with fingers and thumbs of varying sizes. In combination, the adjustable loop and finger stops make the syringe plunger easily operable in both directions with one hand. The result is a syringe which is inexpensive to manufacture, which is compact to store and ship, and which enables an aspiration maneuver to test for the presence of blood indicating that a blood vessel has been penetrated, to be performed easily with one hand.

    • A fluid gas removal drip chamber (10) for use for parenteral administration of fluids is disclosed. The drip chamber has a hydrophobic barrier (28) which extends into the interior of the drip chamber. The hydrophobic barrier preferably comprises at least a portion of a three-dimensional surface. In one embodiment, an inlet port (14) allows fluid to enter the drip chamber from the top of the drip chamber. By shaping the inlet port so that droplets of fluid are formed, a health care professional can monitor the fluid drip rate. In another embodiment, the hydrophobic barrier is configured so that little or no air space exists at the top of the drip chamber. The drip chamber includes means for venting air that is separated from the fluid within the chamber and, at the same time, preventing air from entering the chamber through the venting means. For certain applications, the drip chamber is provided with a hydrophobic filter (68) for filtering the fluid prior to exiting the drip chamber.

    • A free-standing safety cap (14) includes a first compartment (20) for temporarily securing an unsused medical instrument (12) and a second compartment (26) for permanently securing a used medical instrument. The instruments have a sharp end (16), and are fitted with a hub (18). The first compartment has an opening (74) through which the unused instrument can be removed. A stand (70) supports the cap in a position in which an opening (84) in the second compartment is exposed to receive the used instrument without the user having to hold the cap. A locking mechanism (86), preferably one-way, is provided for engaging the hub and permanently securing the sharp end of the used instrument inside the second compartment.

    • This invention is a valve apparatus (10) and method with an elastomeric disk (10d) fixedly disposed between the inlet (11) and outlet (12) members and being deformable to permit flow through the inlet (11) to the outlet (12). Deformation of the disk (10d) in the direction of pressure through the outlet (12) is limited.
