    • A method of making a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) using muscle wrapped around a mandrel to form a muscle pouch, the open end of which is sewn to a circular sheet of patch material having connections to one end of each of a pair of vascular grafts, or alternatively to one end of a single vascular graft. The second ends of these vascular grafts are used to connect the LVAD to the aorta. After the muscle pouch has been formed around the mandrel, the mandrel is removed and replaced by a balloon which is inserted into the muscle pouch and inflated to maintain the desired shape of the muscle pouch during healing and stimulation of the pouch. The balloon is subsequently removed preceding activation of theLVAD to allow it to begin pumping blood. Alternatively, various other shape-maintaining forms which are expandable and collapsible may be used in place of the balloon. In another alternative embodiment, an additional strip of latissimus dorsi or other appropriate muscle or a mechanical clamping device may be used to synchronously compress the aorta between the ends of the vascular grafts anastomosed to the aorta.

    • Apparatus and method for pumping blood and other delicate fluids. The apparatus includes a rotor (12) having an impeller (18) which includes an upper section (22) and a lower section (20) with oppositely disposed surfaces (26, 28), the upper section (22) having a central opening (24). Separating surfaces (30) disposed between the upper and lower sections (22, 20) define a plurality of fluid flow passages (32) between the oppositely disposed surfaces (26, 28). The separating surfaces (30) include a leading edge (45) and a trailing edge (47), the leading edge (45) being disposed at or near the central opening (24) and the trailing edge (47) being disposed at or near the peripheral edge (34) of the impeller (18). This construction maximizes the pressure differential of the fluid from the inlet to the outlet and minimizes turbulence such that the pump has good air entrapment capabilities as well as gentle blood handling characteristics.

    • An autotransfusion apparatus for blood or other similar body liquids comprises a) a container (5) susceptible of being emptied and stable to an underpressure, comprising a lower part (4) and a top part (3), with a1) an inlet opening (20) for the body liquids, which is formed in the top part, a2) a discharge opening (24) for the body liquids, which is formed on the top part (3) and which is topped by a sieve (25) and a3) an opening (9) provided in the lower part (4) of the container in order to establish a gas flow connection with a cavity having a gas pressure different of that prevailing inside the container, b) a membrane (16) susceptible of being deformed by the pressure and impervious to body liquids. The membrane is fixed with a gas-tight relationship to the walls of the container (5), between the bottom part and the top part so as to divide the container (5) into a gas-filled lower cavity (13) and an upper cavity (19) which is tight with respect to the first cavity and intended to receive the body liquid. The autotransfusion apparatus enables to collect rapidly and functionally blood without the risk of damaging the blood and without any danger for the patient, particularly without the danger of causing an aeroembolism, and enables to retransfuse the blood into the patient, since c) the discharge opening (24) is sealable by a floating body.
