    • Patient support appliance of the kind formed from a plurality of contiguous inflated air sacs (10). In conventional air beds of this kind the air is supplied to the bed from a remotely located blower housing via a plurality of conduits each of which leads to a group of air sacs (10). In support appliances of the present invention, the air blower (52) is located within the confines of the appliance of the supporting framework. Also air is supplied by a common main supply conduit (20) to the vicinity of the sacs (10) and pressure-regulating valves (42) within the appliance control the pressure of air fed from the common supply conduit (20) to the groups of sacs (10). These features simplify the construction and maintenance of the support appliances and provide a support appliance which occupies less space and does not have trailing hoses.

    • This invention provides for an ultra low density gel filled deformable cushion (10) which includes a fluid impervious flexible enclosure (12) forming an internal chamber (14). Contained within the internal chamber (14) is a padding fluid composition (16) and a plurality of particulates (18) dispersed within the padding fluid composition (16). The particulates (18) are spherically contoured and have a density which is less than the density of the padding fluid composition (16) for increasing resiliency, deformability and memory of the overall composition within the cushion (10). The spherically contoured particulates are selected from the group consisting of plastic composition microspheres, ceramic composition microspheres and combinations thereof, thereby exhibiting a bounce effect in the gel.

    • There is a clear distinction between hand driven, simple wheel chairs and much higher developed motor driven wheel chairs. The invention provides for a compromise, where a wheel chair of a simple design is or can be provided with a special driving unit (30), which as a self-contained unit, may serve to drive the wheel chair by having one or more driving wheels (32) located between the main wheels (26) of the chair in direct driving engagement with the ground. The driving unit can be secured in such a manner that the driving wheel or wheels (32) may move up and down relative to the main wheels (26), such that a driving engagement can be maintained during driving along a non-planar ground surface. The unit is well suited for mounting on both new and existing wheel chairs. When the driving wheel or wheels (32) are placed accurately midways between the ground engaging portions of the main wheels there will be no problems with respect to lateral dragging of the driving wheels in response to changes of the driving direction.

    • A means for stabilizing the pelvis of a lying patient in a pre-decided angle position relative to a comparatively even bed. A characteristic of the invention is that the means includes a, from a general point of view, disc shaped body (1) with two mutually basically parallel plane surfaces (2, 3). The body (1) is intended to be placed between the lower extremities (5, 6) of the patient and is designed with partly a cavity (4), which reaches from the edge of the body towards its centre and is uniform with and somewhat bigger than the contours of the patient's pelvis seen from aside, partly parts (7-10) protruding from the respective plane surfaces (2, 3), preferably arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the body (1). The parts (7-10) are arranged to keep up the body (1) far enough to give room for one extremity between the bed and the plane surface (2) facing the bed while the other extremity (6) is resting on the opposite plane surface (3), whereby there is some moving space (11) for the extremities (5, 6) between the protruding parts (7-10). At said cavity (4) supporting surfaces (12, 13) are arranged to support the lumbar part of the patient on one side and on the other side the hip bones of the patient whereby the pelvis is stabilized essentially in a right angle to the bed.
