    • A method of manufacturing and a papermaker's or industrial fabric, such as a dryer fabric for the dryer section of a paper , machine, includes the application of a polymeric resin material onto preselected locations on the backside of a base substrate using a piezojet array which deposits the polymeric resin material in droplets having an average diameter of 10p (10 microns) or more to build up discrete, discontinuous deposits of the polymeric resin material having a height of about 0.5 mm at the preselected locations. The preselected locations may be the knuckles formed by the interweaving of the yarns making up the fabric. The purpose of the deposits is to separate the backside. of the dryer fabric from a surface, such as that of a dryer cylinder or turning roll, to enable air trapped between the dryer fabric and the surface to escape in lengthwise and crosswise directions parallel to the surface, instead of being forced through the fabric, possibly causing "drop off". The polymeric resin material is set by means appropriate to its composition, and, optionally, and, if necessary, may be abraded to provide the deposits with a uniform height above the surface plane of the base substrate.

    • A bi-component link for making a modular papermaking fabric has a link base component capable of interconnecting to at least one other link and a surface plate component attached to the link base forming a paper support surface. Each component is made through molding techniques to have predetermined characteristics such as open area, permeability, surface finish, etc. The surface plate component is attached to the link base component for combined effect on fabric characteristics. A papermaking fabric is constructed from a plurality of interconnected bi-component links and has predetermined permeability established by the combination of a pattern of open and contact areas on each component of each link.

    • A papermaking belt and paper made thereon. The papermaking belt comprises a patterned framework (12) and a reinforcing element (14). The papermaking belt may be used as a through air drying belt, a forming wire, a backing wire, a conventional press felt, etc. The papermaking belt has a reinforcing element and a framework extending from the reinforcing element. Intermediate various portions of the framework are deflection conduits (16). The framework is interrupted and subdivided by synclines (18). The framework, synclines and deflection conduits respectively impart first, second and third values of intensive properties to regions of the paper made on these portions of the belt. The value of the intensive property of the regions of the paper corresponding to the synclines is intermediate the value of the regions of the paper corresponding to the framework and deflection conduits. For example, if the papermaking belt according to the present invention is used as a through air drying belt, the density of the regions of the paper corresponding to the synclines will be less than the density of the regions of the paper corresponding to the framework but greater than the density of the regions corresponding to the deflection conduits. Conversely, if the papermaking belt according to the present invention is used as a forming wire, the basis weight of the regions of the paper corresponding to the synclines will be greater than the basis weight of the regions corresponding to the framework but less than the basis weight of the regions corresponding to the deflection conduits.

    • A backside textured papermaking belt is disclosed which is comprised of a framework and a reinforcing structure. The framework has a first surface which defines the paper-contacting side of the belt, a second surface opposite the first surface, and conduits which extend between first and second surfaces of the belt. The first surface of the framework has a paper side network formed therein which defines the conduits. The second surface of the framework has a backside network with passageways that provide surface texture irregularities in the backside network. The papermaking belt is made by applying a coating of photosensitive resinous material to a reinforcing structure which has opaque portions, and then exposing the photosensitive resinous material to light of an activating wavelength through a mask which has transparent and opaque regions and also through the reinforcing structure. A process for making paper products is also disclosed which involves applying a fluid pressure differential from a vaccum source through the belt to a partially-formed embryonic web of papermaking fibers. The fibers in the embryonic web are deflected into the conduits of the papermaking belt by the vaccum pressure while the papermaking belt and the embryonic web travel over the vaccum source. Following the deflection, the paper web is impressed with the paper side network of the belt, and dried to form the final product.
