    • A pin seam for use in woven papermaking fabrics, wherein more than 50 % of the warp strands from each of the fabric ends are used to form the pintle retaining loops. The loops formed at one of the opposing fabric ends have an "S" orientation, while the loops formed at the second opposing end have a "Z" orientation, thereby allowing the two sets of pintle retaining loops to interdigitate easily. The resulting seam is strong, easily installed on the papermaking machine and has a reduced propensity to mark the paper web. The invention is particularly applicable to fabrics woven using 3-shed weave patterns or integral multiples thereof.

    • An improved papermaker's forming fabric is described in which a 14 or 16 shaft weave design is used. This design uses a construction in which the larger cross direction yarns on the machine side of the fabric float under at least 10 machine direction yarns. The binding points for these large-diameter cross direction yarns lie directly under a four-yarn float of paper side cross direction yarns. Further, the machine direction yarns float over only two adjacent cross direction yarns, at a point substantially halfway between the machine side binding points. This construction permits the use of very large cross direction machine side strands, without compromising the drainage capabilities of the fabric and wire mark propensity. The invention is particulaly useful in fabric designs where extra cross direction floater yarns are included on the paper side of the fabric, in which case the machine side binding points are located under the larger of the paper side cross direction yarns.

    • A paper machine dryer fabric in which at least a portion of the component yarns are monofilaments comprised of a copolymer of dimethylolcyclohexane, terephthalic acid, and isophthalic acid, and an effective amount of a hydrolysis stabiliser. The molar ratio of terephthalic acid to isophthalic acid used in preparing the copolymer is about 83:17, and the copolymer has an intrinsic viscosity which is greater than about 0.75 dL/g. The copolymer imparts to the monofilaments an increased resistance to hydrolytic degradation and improved knot properties, in comparison to other known polymers used in dryer fabrics. Low density polyethylene may optionally be added to the copolymer to increase the resistance of the monofilaments to surface contamination and soiling.

    • A paper machine dryer fabric includes hollow thermoplastic monofilaments to replace at least a portion of the wefts, also known as cross-machine direction strands. Fabrics including such monofilaments may be either a woven fabric, or a spiral fabric. The deformable nature of the hollow monofilaments decreases the air permeability of the fabric, and in the case of spiral fabrics, improves monofilament retention within the helical coils between the hinge yarns. The hollow monofilaments have a solidity in the range of from about 50 % to about 80 %. A suitable thermoplastic is polyethylene terephthalate. Hollow monofilaments do not have the disadvantages of other deformable yarns, such as spun yarns, multifilament yarns or plied monofilament yarns, each of which tend to hold and entrap within their structure both water and foreign matter.

    • A dewatering fabric for the press section of a paper making machine is described having improved dewatering characteristics, improved resistance to compaction, and enhanced ability to bridge cavities, such as grooves or holes, in press section rolls. The fabric includes at least two distinct layers of flattened monofilament warp yarns at a high fill factor, and at least one layer of weft yarns. Advantageously, the fabric is constructed to provide long exposed floats of one of the distinct layers of warp yarns on the paper side of the fabric. The fabric may be used alone, with a paper side batt, or with a batt on both sides.
