    • Provided is a water distillation system (10) for distilling sea or brackish water. The system has a feed water arrangement (14 and 37) for supplying feed water from a feed water source (FEED) to one or more flashing stages (28). Each flashing stage has a water flash evaporator (29) for vaporising at least a part of the feed water therein, and a condenser (35) for receiving the vapour and to convert at least a part of the vapour into distilled water. A heat storage arrangement (20) provided with a heat generating source for storing heat energy is used to heat a fluid medium flowing through it. A heat exchange arrangement (24) receives the hot fluid medium and transfer heat to a stream of vapour flowing under pressure from each flashing stage. The vapour leaving the heat exchange arrangement being at a raised temperature is arranged to be condensed into water at the condenser and to transfer some of its latent heat to the evaporator.

    • A liquid sample (3) hold in an open container (2) and including a volatile solvent, is evaporated by continuously removing inert gas rich in vapour by means of a suction tube (5) whose open end is held close to the top surface of the liquid. Vapour in the gas is then extracted in a refrigerated condensing vessel (6), from whence the purified gas is fed by a pump (7) for recirculation back into a sealed chamber (1) in which the container is mounted. In a modification, the inert gas is fed directly through a nozzle (17) into the container (2) while the gas/vapour mixture is extracted from the chamber (1) for recirculation, after passing through a condenser (6) or the like.

    • There is disclosed a method and apparatus for removing a contaminant from a fluid feed stream containing the contaminant. The method includes the steps of providing a feed stream (10) and heating it in a first step (18) to at least partially remove some of the contaminants and recover energy from a concentrate and distillate generated. Further heating the feed stream in a second heating step (20) in a heated separator generates a saturated vapour fraction (30) and a concentrated liquid contaminant fraction. The vapour fraction (30) may be compressed (32) to generate a temperature differential in the reboiler exchanger (34) with the vapour fraction being passed into contact with a reboiler exchanger (34) to provide a stream of condensed vapour from the reboiler. The stream may be circulated through the reboiler exchanger (34) and the heated separator to maintain from about 1 % to about 50 % by mass vapour in the stream. The apparatus includes a unique configuration of a vapour compressor, heated separator in combination with a forced circulation (42, 44, 38) circuit to generate the decontamination result.
