摘要： Centralized charging systems and methods are disclosed for providing offline charging and online charging for a plurality of network elements. The centralized' charging system (101) is implemented in a communication network between the network elements (110, 111) and offline/online charging systems.(120, 130). A network element interface (102) of the centralized charging system receives charging request messages from CTFs (112, 113) in the network elements. An accounting data forwarding function (104) processes charging data in the charging request messages to determine if offline or online charging is invoked for the services. For offline charging, the accounting data forwarding function generates offline accounting request messages that include the charging data. For online charging, the accounting data forwarding function generates online accounting request messages that include the charging data. The charging system interface (106) then transmits the offline accounting request messages to the offline charging system (120), and transmits the online accounting request messages to the online charging system(130).

A method that incorporates teachings of present disclosure may include, for example, linking various accounts to a wireless enabled device (62) of a wireless service subscriber, hi one embodiment, device address like telephone numbers and electronic mail addresses for devices that may call or be called by the subscriber may be associated one of the various accounts. In operation, a call may be completed between th subscriber's wireless enabled device (62) and one of the other devices, and a call metric for the call may be tracked. Where a billing system cannot keep pace with new services being marketed and the specialized pricing associated with such new services, a system and method are provided that generate a billing augmentation messages that are sent to the billing entity and that cause an incremental increase of a bill for the handling of a particular message type. The incremental increase is equivalent to a charge that the billing system is already configured to bill. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the message is an electronic message such as an SMS message and the billing augmentation messages are generated by and sent from an intercarrier vendor.
