    • A tape drive that passes first and second sides of a storage tape by respective first and second tape head assemblies disposed on a common side of a tape path of the tape to allow for dual-sided recording and/or reading of the tape by the tape head assemblies. Tape leaving a cartridge/supply reel within the tape drive may be wound over one or more tape path guides (e.g., rollers) to face a first side of the tape (e.g., with a first magnetic layer) towards a first tape head assembly. The tape may subsequently be wound over one or more additional guides and then passed in front of a second tape head assembly such that the opposing side of the tape (e.g., with a second magnetic layer) faces the second tape head assembly. After passing by the second tape head assembly, the tape may be wrapped onto a take-up reel.

    • A magnetic tape recording and reproducing apparatus uses a cassette (2) having a pressure roller (4) near one corner with an aperture in one adjacent edge for a drive roller (12) to engage the tape (1) and an aperture in the other adjacent edge for the tape to engage a transducing head (10). The drive roller (12) and head (10) are fixed in position and a spring (14) presses the cassette (2) towards the drive roller (12), the pressure on the pressure roller (4) also serving to retain the cassette (2) and locate it in against fixed stops (22). The head (10) has projections (25, 26) for aligning the tape (1) and determining the position of the cassette (2). The head position is referenced to the casing by standing on a surface (11) of the casing and being held in place by resilient arms secured (31) to the casing. The head (10) is connected to a read-write circuit using a push-pull amplifier powered by two current sources. Any one of a plurality of such apparatus can be selected using a chain of D-type flip-flops (one per apparatus) and applying a number of clock pulses corresponding the apparatus to be selected.

    • A magnetic tape head assembly with split tape stabilizer element can eliminate the variation of tape wrap angle caused by drive manufacturing and reduce tape wear by reduce tape over-wrap angle on head. The magnetic tape head assembly comprises a recording gap, containing read/write element, and a split tape stabilizer element to support tape before tape passes through recording gap across the width of the head. The split tape stabilizer is aligned with the read/write element along the recording gap and this relationship is fixed by bonding the two components together. A tape head is formed having a first profile and having a stabilizer head interface area. A stabilizer head is formed having a second profile and having a tape head interface area. The tape head assembly and stabilizer head are then bonded by bonding the stabilizer head interface area to the tape head interface area such that the tape head and the stabilizer head have a desired configuration relative to each other and such that a gap is formed between the tape head and the stabilizer head.
