    • Embodiments of apparatus, computer program product, and method for verifying fingerprint images are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of verifying fingerprint images includes receiving an inquiry fingerprint image of a user, identifying pattern characteristics of the inquiry fingerprint image, identifying minutiae characteristics of the inquiry fingerprint image, determining a weighted combination of the pattern characteristics of the inquiry fingerprint image and the minutiae characteristics of the inquiry fingerprint image, where the weighted combination comprises a pattern matching weight and a minutiae matching weight derived in accordance with a separation of a first empirical probability density function of genuine fingerprints from a second empirical probability density function of impostor fingerprints, and verifying the inquiry fingerprint image based on a set of fused scores computed using the weighted combination of the pattern characteristics of the inquiry fingerprint image and the minutiae characteristics of the inquiry fingerprint image.

    • A minutia-based method of matching a reference fingerprint image (20) and an input fingerprint image (40), represented respectively by a first set of minutiae (34) and a second set of minutiae (42), is disclosed. The method of matching the fingerprints (20,40) comprises: determining a first local neighbourhood (48) for each minutia (44) in the first and second sets of minutiae (42), each includes at least one minutia (46) neighbouring the respective minutia (44); comparing the first local neighbourhoods (48) in the first set of minutiae (34) with the first local neighbourhoods in the second set of minutiae (34) to determine matched minutiae (50) appearing in both the first and second sets of minutiae (34,42); filtering the matched minutiae (50) based on a difference between their positions in the first and second sets of minutiae (34,42); determining a second local neighbourhood (54) for each unmatched minutia in the first and second sets of minutiae (42), each including at least one matched minutia (50) neighbouring the respective unmatched minutia; comparing the second local neighbourhoods (54) in the first set of minutiae (34) with the second local neighbourhoods (54) in the second set of minutiae (42) to determine further matched minutiae appearing in both the first and second sets of minutiae (34,42); filtering the matched minutiae (50) and the further matched minutiae based on a difference between their positions in the first and second sets of minutiae (34,42); and determining whether the first and second fingerprint images (20,40) are the same based on the matched minutiae (50) and the further matched minutiae.
