    • A unit (10) for disposing of refuse and contaminants by thermal oxidation includes a housing (12) having a bottom (14), side walls (16, 17, 18, 19) and a top (15) disposed in surrounding relation toan interior (23) thereof. A partial wall structure (30) divides the housing interior (23) to define a first thermal oxidation chamber (40) sized and configured to contain the refuse and contaminants and a second flue gas burning chamber (50) disposed in air-flow communication with said first chamber (40). Heating elements (62) are provided in the first and second chambers (40, 50) to raise the temperature to a predetermined level in order to induce thermal oxidation of refuse in the first chamber (40) and to promote more complete thermal oxidation of the resultant flue gases passing through the second chamber (50). An exhaust stack (70) receives the flue gases exiting from the second chamber (50) and includes a filter (74) therein for removing remaining contaminants from the flue gases prior to entering the atmosphere.

    • A waste recycling system which separates the reusable components within waste such as tires by incomplete burning followed by a series of separation steps. The incomplete burning is carried out within a chamber (40) having at least two hollow perforated rollers on which the waste is supported. The tires are ignited and caused to smolder within the chamber (40), allowing gaseous and vapor by-products to be released (92) and travel downward into the rollers. Inorganic solid matter remaining from the combustion process continuously falls between the slowly rotating rollers into a removal bin or conveyor. The gaseous combustion by-products are directed through an oil bath filter (90) having a mesh on which sprayers apply a cooling oil mist to capture the oil vapor. The remaining hydrocarbon emissions are burned incompletely (120), and the resulting carbon black within the effluent filtered out (123). The effluent is then completely combusted (125) generating heat and then scrubbed (124) to emit a relatively clean gaseous discharge (129).
