    • A method for automated refuelling is provided, the method comprising the steps of: providing the vehicle with a radio frequency transponder effective to communicate information sufficient to establish a position of a fuel inlet on the vehicle; receiving the communicated information at location where the vehicle is to be refuelled when the vehicle is located at the location where the vehicle is to be refuelled; when the vehicle is located at the location where the vehicle is to be refuelled, determining the position and orientation of the vehicle within the location; determining from the position and orientation of the vehicle and the communicated information, an expected location of the fuel inlet; after the vehicle is driven to an automated refuelling apparatus, initiating refuelling by moving a fuel dispenser to adjacent the expected location of the fuel inlet; providing a sensor on the fuel dispenser to determine the location of the fuel inlet relative to the fuel dispenser; repositioning the fuel dispenser based on a signal from the sensor on the fuel dispenser to a position from which the vehicle can be refuelled from the dispenser; and refuelling the vehicle from the repositioned fuel dispenser. This method, and the apparatus useful in the practice of this method, do not require accurate initial positioning of the vehicle by the driver, or extensive modifications to the vehicle. The refuelling operation is not commenced until engine operation of the vehicle is discontinued, and the refuelling operation can be discontinued when the vehicle engine is restarted.

    • Apparatus for the automatic fuelling of vehicles, primarily cars, comprising a robot (2) which includes a robot head (3) that is movable relative to the robot so as to enable it to be brought to a predetermined position in relation to the vehicle fuel-tank pipe, this positioning of the robot head being effected by means of a positioning system which includes a transceiver unit that is mounted adjacent the robot head, said unit preferably being constructed to operate at microwave frequency, and a passive transponder (13) which is placed in a predetermined position on the vehicle. The invention is characterized by a plurality of different transponders (13) of which only one is carried by a vehicle; in that each of said transponders (13) is provided with a simple code which the transponder is intended to modulate on a signal transmitted by the transceiver unit (14) and reflected by the transponder; and by a decoder (15) which functions to decode the code from the signal received by the transceiver unit (14) from the transponder (13) and delivers the code to a computer (23) connected to the robot; in that the computer (23) includes a memory in which a specific movement plan is stored for each code; and in that the computer is constructed to steer the robot head (3) in the movement plan defined by the received code.

The system may include a server connected to a network and a database accessible by the server that includes approved refueling location information and approved user and user vehicle information, including vehicle identification fuel preference information. The server sends refueling instructions to a fuel carrier computer having a user interface which allows updating of route information with real-time information pertaining to user requests and fuel carrier location data.

    • A fuel dispenser is configured to transmit fueling information to a receiver associated with a vehicle at a first fueling position adjacent the fuel dispenser. The fuel dispenser comprises a control system configured to generate first fueling information associated with a first transaction at the fuel dispenser. The fuel dispenser also comprises first transmitter electronics in electronic communication with the control system. The first transmitter electronics are configured to produce first RDS information based on the first fueling information. Also, the first transmitter electronics comprise modulator circuitry to modulate a radio frequency (RF) carrier signal carrying the first RDS information. The RF carrier signal has a predetermined frequency. The fuel dispenser further comprises an antenna in electrical communication with the first transmitter electronics to radiate the modulated RF carrier signal over the first fueling position for receipt at the vehicle receiver.
