    • An automatic shifter for derailleur which includes a pivot arm (42) secured to the frame (38) of the bicycle in a stationary relationship. A shifter arm (44) pivotally secured to the pivot arm in a manner to rotatively move relative to the frame, a follower (58) attached to the shifter in rotative engagement, an operating spring biasing between the pivot arm and the shifter arm to continuously urge the follower against the upper run of the bicycle chain to depress the chain; a stabilizer (88) interconnected between the pivot arm and the shifter arm in a manner to allow substantially unrestricted counter-clockwise rotation of the shifter arm and to deter or restrict clockwise rotative movement of the shifter arm and a flexible cable (78) interconnecting the shifter arm with the derailleur whereby the derailleur will be automatically operated to index the chain across the small diameter cluster gears in response to rotational movement of the shifter arm as caused by interaction of the bicycle chain and the follower.

    • The following technical means are devised so as to improve operability in changing speeds by making small the difference in restoring elastic force between the initial deformation and final deformation of a pantograph link mechanism in a derailleur for a bicycle, as well as to make smaller and lighter the derailleur and a speed-change operation lever device. More specifically, a first pivoting member (12) of a predetermined length and a second pivoting member (13) of a predetermined length are pivotally supported at respective predetermined positions of different members of a pantograph link mechanism (7). The leading ends of these first pivoting member (12) and second pivoting member (13) are pin connected to each other so as to provide a construction in which when the above parallelogram pantograph link mechanism (7) is deformed, said first pivoting member (12) and said second pivoting member (13) are pivoted relative to said respective members on which said pivoting members are pivotally supported, and a restore spring is interposed between either said first pivoting member (12) or said second pivoting member (13) and a selected member of said respective members constituting said parallelogram pantograph link mechanism (7).

    • A bicycle derailleur gear shifting system having a rotatable handgrip actuator cam which is coupled with the derailleur shifting mechanism through a control cable system so as to control the derailleur mechanism. Separate actuator cams are associated with the front and rear derailleurs. For the down-shifting direction, at least the rear derailleur cam is configured so as to substantially compensate for increasing force of the derailleur return spring; so as to substantially compensate for numerous cumulative lost motions in the derailleur shifting mechanism and cable system, and for chain gap variation; and so as to overshift the chain a sufficient amount beyond the destination freewheel sprocket so that the chain will approach the destination sprocket in the same direction as it would in the up-shift direction, but not sufficient to cause a double shift, or derailling from the #1 sprocket. A front derailleur cam is configured to provide fine-tuning for ''cross-over'' riding. In one form of the invention a secondary overshift boost cam is added axially in tandem with the primary cam, and is adaptable to both the front and rear derailleur shift actuators.
