    • A bicycle derailleur gear shifting system having a rotatable handgrip actuator cam (74) which is coupled with derailleur shifting mechanism (54) through a control cable system (60, 64) so as to control the derailleur mechanism (56, 58). Separate actuator cams are associated with the front and rear derailleurs. For the down-shifting direction, at least the rear derailleur cam is configured so as to substantially compensate for increasing force of the derailleur return spring (208) so as to substantially compensate for numerous cumulative lost motions in the derailleur shifting mechanism (54) and cable system (60, 64), and for chain gap variations; and so as to overshift the chain a sufficient amount beyond the destination freewheel sprocket (54a) so that the chain will approach the destination sprocket (#5) in the same direction as it would in the up-shift direction, but not sufficient to cause a double shift, or derailling from the #1 sprocket. A front derailleur cam is configured to provide fine-tuning for ''cross-over'' riding.

    • A hand-operated shift actuator (16) displaces a derailleur control cable (22). The actuator (16) includes a stationary member (60) that is affixed relative to a bicycle handlebar (44). Rotation of the rotating member (62) causes the control cable (22) to be displaced, thus actuating the derailleur (24) to which the control cable (22) is attached. A plurality of detent positions (104-115) each correspond to a derailleur overshift position. The rotating member (62) is rotatable in a first direction to any of these detent positions (104-114). A spring-loaded overshift corrector (90, 142) urges the rotating member (62) from an overshift position in a second direction to a respective new desired sprocket center position when the rotating member (62) is released by the hand of the rider.

    • An improved two-piece control cable adjustment device (20) for offsetting a change of relative length between the outer sheath (12) and control wire (18) operatively linking a control mechanism such as a bicycle shifter (20) or brake lever to an operating mechanism such as a derailleur (24) or brake. The adjustment device includes an adjuster nut (40) having a threaded bore (42) cooperating with a mounting member threaded shaft (30) and an indexing mechanism achieved by the relative elastic deformation of rotatably engaging protrusions (32) and/or detents circumferentially formed on the cooperating adjuster nut (40) and mounting member, thereby enables riders to sense each increment of stepped adjustment. The adjuster nut (40) is configured to protectively enclose both the cooperating threads (30) and engaging portion of the protrusions (44) and detents from environmental exposure thereby preventing the trapping of external particles in the threads, a primary concern for use in the harsh mud and dirt environment common to off-road biking, and in turn preventing the premature wear and replacement of parts.

A b-knuckle flange (160) militates against the derailment of the drive chain from the upper guide wheel while permitting maximum lateral flexing of the drive chain (48) during shifting between sprockets (46) on the freewheel. A rigid arcuate surface (174) may be provided as an extension of the b-knuckle (170) in replacement of a segment of a Bowden cable housing (38) to obviate the accumulation of water and foreign matter.
