    • A novel system for gathering, analyzing and storing information for the purpose of motor vehicle theft and vandalism investigations. An on board secure vehicle mounted surveillance system, that can monitor the vehicle for brief or extended periods of time that can operate whether the vehicle is on or off, having a video camera (12) for generating video signals of an incident proximate the vehicle, having an audio device for monitoring events proximate the vehicle, motion sensor to activate the system and lights-activated by the system to illuminate the area viewed by the camera. The video signals are digitized into a synchronized data file (34), carrying a unique vehicle identification and a time indicator with other input data occurring on or about the vehicle such as audio recordings and the like. The file is encrypted and stored on a large capacity, code accessible device or transmitted, via a transceiver, real time to authorities and/or an off vehicle storage site. Once written, the encrypted file cannot be altered or corrupted, decrypted without the encryption key, or accessed without the access authorization code. The stored data file can be down loaded to be used as evidence.

    • A vehicle monitoring system. The system includes an electronic access card in which the electronic access card stores information associated with a user of the electronic access card, a card reader for receiving the electronic access card and for reading the associated information and a vehicle transceiver coupled to the card reader. The vehicle transceiver transmits at least a portion of the associated information to at least one of a monitoring station and a portable unit. The monitoring station and the portable unit each include a computer for displaying the associated information. In one arrangement, the card reader and the vehicle transceiver can be mounted in a vehicle, and the vehicle transceiver can transmit the associated information from any vehicle having the card reader and the vehicle transceiver. In addition, the portable unit can be a law enforcement mobile unit.

    • The invention concerns a vehicle tracking network including a plurality of subscriber vehicles and a control-center; and systems and methods for tracking vehicles, which are subscribers to such vehicle tracking network. In certain implementations, the method for tracking a subscriber vehicle includes the following operations carried out at the subscriber vehicle: monitoring operation of one or more services related to at least one of a wireless network communication service and positioning service associated with the subscriber vehicle; upon detecting a failure in at least one of said services, generating a corresponding distress signal encoded to be identifiable by other subscriber vehicle(s) of the vehicle tracking network; and broadcasting the encoded distress signal such that it is detectable by one or more of the other subscriber vehicles of the vehicle tracking network, which are located in the vicinity of the subscriber vehicle broadcasting the distress signal. Another subscriber vehicle(s), which receive the distress signal, may thereby initiate automatic notification of the condition of the vehicle broadcasting the distress signal to the control center.

    • An asset tracking system includes a central control station with an associated datastore for storing asset information. The stored information includes multiple unique identifiers, each identifier being associated with an asset tracking unit in the form of a mobile base station asset tracking unit or a beacon asset tracking unit. The two types of tracking unit are fitted to assets such as vehicles. The mobile base station asset tracking units include GPS modules and can determine their position, and can also communicate with the central control station. The beacon asset tracking units can communicate with the mobile base station asset tracking units via short range radio transmissions and their positions can thus be determined from the position of nearby mobile base station asset tracking units. The control station includes a communication module which can receive, over an existing communication network, location data messages from a mobile base station asset tracking unit fitted to a first asset. The message contains geographical location data on the first asset generated by the mobile base station asset tracking unit as well as the unique identifier of the mobile base station asset tracking unit and the unique identifier of a beacon asset tracking unit fitted to a second asset in the vicinity of the first asset. A processor module at the control station extracts from the location data message the unique identifier of the beacon asset tracking unit and the geographical location data of the first asset and associates this information to record the geographical location of the second asset.
