    • Covering machine associated with a work top (12) on which a covering film (14) and at least an object (16) to be covered with the film (14) are disposed. The machine comprises heat-welding means (20) provided with a pair of clamping elements (22, 24) to clamp the film (14) on the work top (12), and a heat- welding element (28). The heat-welding means (20) have at least an inactive position, in which the clamping elements (22, 24) are disposed separated so as to interpose the film (14) between them on the work top (12), and an operating position in which they are disposed close, so as to clamp and heat- weld the film (14) by means of the associated heat- welding element (28). The machine comprises cutting and removal means (32) to distance a portion of scrap (15) of the film (14) after the heat- welding. The cutting and removal means (32) are mechanically coupled with the heat-welding means (20) and have at least an independent movement with respect thereto, in coordination with their movement between the inactive position and the operating position, in order to assume at least a resting position, in which they do not interfere with the film (14), and a removal position, corresponding to the operating position of the heat-welding means (20), in which they thrust the scrap portion (15) so as to distance it from the film (14) which remains on the work top.

    • A bag forming apparatus (100) and method that features a single drive unit (180) for operating both a drive roller (168) and cross-cut mechanism (360) with the drive motor assembly (178) being internalized within the drive roller. The bag forming apparatus is particularly designed for feeding, solely through use of a full film width contact drive roller, film material derived from a single supply roll (410) of two ply film material. The arrangement of the bag forming apparatus is such that there is avoided tracking problems, as well as any requirement for a supply roll driving, braking and tension monitoring mechanisms. The supply roll can be simply laid in position on a pair of underlying, passive support rollers (122, 124) which are prevented from inertia induced over-rolling by a passive friction device (128) which also imparts a degree of tension in the film material being fed between the single, cylindrical drive roller and opposing pair of spaced, driven rollers (264, 266) which are in a pinching relationship with the film material being fed past the drive roller. The bag forming apparatus and method also features easy slide in, slide out edge sealer (416, 418) and vent hole (806) former inserts that are held by, and move with, the bag width adjustable driven rollers. The edge seal inserts feature a heating element (450) that is compressed against the film material by an internal bias in the edge sealer insert. A heating element (808) can also be used for the vent hole inserts. The heating element (808) can be a plug-in heating unit (652) easily inserted and removed from the remainder of the insert. The cross-cut device is swung into a film material pinching position with respect to the drive roller by a drive transmission assembly (232, 324) and, upon return to a stand-by state, the cross-cut device automatically separates the completed bag below and partially completed bag above the cross-cut/seal. The bag forming apparatus of the present invention is particularly well suited for use with a high speed, high volume foam dispenser for producing foam-in-bag products for packaging as the automatic cross-cut avoids bag separation delays associated with reverse film feed/separation requirement of the prior art and the forward feeding of the film material and foam input cycle can be started immediately upon formation of the upper bag's bottom seal (or at least upon return of the cross-cut bar to a stand-by state) and the bag feed can be continued prior to, during and after foam input, the fast cushion bag formation speed (e.g.,
