    • A method is known in prior art for treating waste water in an activated sludge tank, according to which a gaseous stream containing oxygen is introduced into the waste water to be treated, using at least one long tubular diffuser (1). The invention aims to improve said method in order to obtain a better use of oxygen, by the subsequent optimisation of the bubble size and gas throughput. To this end, the long tubular diffuser (1) is continuously displaced in the waste water. A suitable device for carrying out said method comprises a long tubular diffuser (1) which has diffusion openings for introducing the gaseous stream containing oxygen into the waste water to be treated and a supply line (3) connected to said long tubular diffuser (1) for supplying a gaseous stream containing oxygen to the waste water to be treated. The long tubular diffuser (1) is connected to a displacement device (2; 3; 4) comprising a drive (4) and can be continuously displaced in the waste water.
