    • A simple, inexpensive prosthetic foot is provided incorporating a cushioned ankle including an ankle block formed of a resilient material or bladder having desired compliance and energy return characteristics. The ankle block is sandwiched between a foot element and an ankle element. One or more openings extends through the ankle block with a substantially transverse orientation relative to a forward walking motion. The size and shape of these openings, as well as the insertion of different types of stiffeners therein, provide desired performance characteristics to the ankle block. When the ankle block takes the form of one or more inflatable bladders, the pressure within these bladders is individually controlled by valves to provide desired performance characteristics to different portions of the prosthetic foot. A pump system can also be used to control and generate fluid pressure into these bladders. A preferred pump system generates fluid pressure based upon the movement of the amputee onto two telescoping pylons that are connected to the prosthetic foot.

    • A system for a prosthetic comprises a plurality of expandable gas bladders (140) and at least one valve (120) to allow gas to flow into and/or out of the bladders. The system has a plurality of pressure sensors (160). The system has one or more vents in fluid communication with the source of gas and/or the plurality of gas bladders. At least one of the one or more vents is arranged to direct gas to an area to be cooled. There is also at least one vent valve (150a) to control gas exit from the one or more vents. The system further has a control system (104) for controlling the pressure in the plurality of gas bladders in response to measurement data produced by the plurality of pressure sensors. A method of fitting a prosthetic is also provided.

A plurality of bladders 206 are preferably provided, in one embodiment, substantially only on a posterior portion of the socket. The bladders 206 may be organized into zones, with the zones being inflatable to differing pressures depending on volume fluctuations in a residual limb. Pressure sensors may be provided for each bladder 206 or for each zone, and flow regulators 208 may be provided to control fluid flow into or out of the bladders 206 or zones of bladders based on readings from the pressure sensors to control volume within the insert. Alternatively, bladders 206 can be manually inflated depending on an amputee's needs.

    • An attenuator apparatus has an outer housing (10) with a first chamber (12) filled with a first fluid, and a bellows member (18) of elastomeric material mounted in the first chamber (25) and having a second chamber filled with a second fluid, the bellows member having a first end facing away from the first chamber. A piston (24) is slidably mounted in the housing at the first end of the bellows member for acting on the bellows member in response to a force applied to the piston so as to expand the bellows member in the first chamber and cushion the force. The bellows member returns to its original configuration and biases the piston back in a second direction opposite to the first direction on removal of the force.
