    • A glue application method and system (10) comprises a continuous paper substrate (14) moving in a downstream direction along a path of travel. A first direct contact capacitive sensor (16) under the paper substrate (14) upstream of glue application and in direct contact with the under surface of the paper substrate (14) produces a signal representative of the dielectric constant of the paper substrate (14). A second direct contact capacitive sensor (18) under the paper substrate (14) downstream of glue application and in direct contact with the under surface of the paper substrate (14) with glue (12) thereon produces a second signal representative of the dielectric constant of the paper substrate (14) with glue (12) thereon. A control (28) determines differences between the first and second signals thereby indicating that glue has been applied to the paper substrate.

    • An adhesive transfer system for applying a pattern of adhesive to a web of tipping paper as it is being fed through a smoking article filter assembly unit is disclosed. It comprises a transfer roller and an applicator roller. The transfer roller has an engraved pattern on its surface that corresponds to the pattern of adhesive to be applied to the tipping paper web. The applicator roller is nipped with the transfer roller so that adhesive received on its surface is transferred from said engraved region onto the applicator roller as the transfer roller and applicator roller rotate to form an adhesive pattern on the applicator roller for subsequent transfer onto a moving web of tipping paper in contact with said applicator roller. The engraved pattern comprises individual adhesive containing cells to break up adhesive that coats the engraved region of the transfer roller.

    • The invention concerns a device for detecting, in a cigarette-manufacturing machine, the sufficiency of an adhesive coating on a strip of paper, in particular a filter cover paper, which is subsequently to be stuck together. The state of the adhesive coating on the strip (10) of paper is determined by measuring the moisture content by means of several capacitative sensors mounted in a sliding plate. In the event of an adhesive coating being defective, a signal is generated which is used to control the cigarette-manufacturing machine. The invention also concerns a control device which enables the application of adhesive to a filter cover paper with ventilation zones to be controlled as a function of the running speed of a filter attachment machine. The invention enables the productivity of the filter attachment machine to be increased and the rate of rejection owing to faulty application of adhesive to be decreased.
