    • Process for determining a geometrical parameter for fibres, in particular for crimped, irregularly structured fibres such as textile fibres and tobacco fibres. A specific quantity of fibre is isolated on a support. Using a camera, two congruent pictures are made of the isolated fibres. From the congruent pictures, which are arranged one over the other, a determination is made, using a grid, of the number of grid elements covered by the fibres. The pictures are then displaced in relation to one another by one and/or several grid steps (xo, yo) to (-x) and (+y) through (x/+/-y) (diagonal). For reasons of symmetry, the (-x) and (-y) shefts give the same results as the shifts (-x/+/-y) the same as (+x/+y). The number of grid elements with fibres of the two pictures, which still overlap after displacement, is determined and added to the number of grid elements with fibres of the non-displaced pictures. By dividing the result by the number of grid elements with fibres of the non-displaced pictures it is possible to obtain the geometric parameter. The division is a normalisation. The parameter is thus dependent on the number of fibres applied.

    • The invention concerns a device for detecting, in a cigarette-manufacturing machine, the sufficiency of an adhesive coating on a strip of paper, in particular a filter cover paper, which is subsequently to be stuck together. The state of the adhesive coating on the strip (10) of paper is determined by measuring the moisture content by means of several capacitative sensors mounted in a sliding plate. In the event of an adhesive coating being defective, a signal is generated which is used to control the cigarette-manufacturing machine. The invention also concerns a control device which enables the application of adhesive to a filter cover paper with ventilation zones to be controlled as a function of the running speed of a filter attachment machine. The invention enables the productivity of the filter attachment machine to be increased and the rate of rejection owing to faulty application of adhesive to be decreased.
