    • A polyacid polyanhydride is used as a bleach activator especially for improving low temperature bleaching performance of peroxygen bleaches such as hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate, in laundry and other detergent formulations. The polyanhydrides are preferably made from polybasic, usually dibasic, carboxylic acids, which may be aliphatic and/or aromatic in nature. The polyanhydride may be a homopolymer or a copolymer and has at least 2 monomer units on average per chain. The polyanhydride is preferably made by reacting the free dibasic acids with excess acetic anhydride and refluxing until the desired molecular weight is achieved followed by removal of acetic acid formed and excess acetic anhydride. Examples of polyanhydrides are polymers of sebacic, adipic, azelaic, succinic, fumaric, iso- and per-phtalic and citric acids. The polyanhydrides are solids which are easy to handle, relatively storage stable and give bleach activation.

    • A concentrated alkaline isotropic fabric washing liquid detergent composition comprising at least 23 % of surfactants and further comprising at least 0.2 % hydrogen peroxide bleach, the composition is substantially free from hydrotropes which cause the pH to reduce and impair the effectiveness of the composition. Also a concentrated alkaline isotropic fabric washing liquid detergent composition comprising at least 15 % by weight of surfactant further comprises at least 0.2 % by weight hydrogen peroxide bleach and an optical brightener and is also substantially free from hydrotropes. The compositions may be used as a main wash bleaching liquid or a pretreatment liquid and may be activated with a bleach activator.

    • A process for bleaching or disinfecting a substrate comprising the steps of: (a) reacting in aqueous solution, at an initial pH below 8, or pKa' if pKa' is lower than 8, at least one bleach activator, which is a reactive acyl group donor, with a source of peroxide to form a strong oxidant, the ratio of available peroxide to reactive acyl groups being in the range 2:1 to 1:3, and (b) contacting the substrate with the strong oxidant at a contact pH less than 8 or pKa' if pKa' is less than 8, where pKa' is the lowest pKa of the percarboxylic acid or acids formed by perhydrolysis of the reactive acyl group or groups of the bleach activator or activators, provided that the bleach activator or mixture of bleach activators used can react with hydrogen peroxide to form a soluble diacyl peroxide.
